What It's Like Being A Social Media Director For Odyssey

It's fun, but a lot of work. But still fun.

What It's Like Being A Social Media Director For Odyssey

You know, I wonder if I could one day become a Social Media Manager for a company with the experience I have with Odyssey... Who knows, I just know that I have increasingly enjoyed my job as a Social Media Director and decided that I am going to do it as long as I can.

Every morning, I start by checking our content management system (CMS) in case articles have been published. Sometimes the minute they're published they already have a couple shares. I also always check my phone and social media to see what's trending, because on Mondays we have our weekly brainstorming. My parents, friends and boyfriend always get on my case about being on my phone too much. *Ding ding ding* The number one sign you're a social media director/social media junky is if your phone is always nearby. My life pretty much revolves around my phone.

In the afternoon,I check the CMS again. Usually by Wednesday, I send out message to Creators if the sharing is where it should be for the week. Usually, I offer advice that I think will help them generate more pageviews and shares, like what platform their article could do well on or who to reach out to.

Usually during the day when I'm home or at work, ideas for future articles come to my mind, so I write them down in my little red notebook. It is always good to have a notebook to doodle article ideas in, both for yourself (Odyssey SMDs still write an article a week) but also for the rest of the team. Part of being a Social Media Director is having trending topics on hand when a Creator is stuck without an idea.

Every time we on board a new member, I always do a photo and blurb about them in the group (my team uses Facebook, but others use GroupMe – both are great spaces for a Creator introduction) so that everyone can know if we have a new Creator and to also follow them on social media. Networking, yo!

I think the one pet peeve I have being the SMD is that when I message people, I can tell that they've seen my message because it says underneath, Read at 1:27 p.m. Guys, I see you. Don't think I don't see you ignoring me.

If you are on social media like literallyall the time and looking for a good job to get you into the social media marketing world, this is the job for you. It is awesome and I love working with the Creators at my school and making sure that their articles get out to the world. If you're a Content Creator at Odyssey and your community doesn't have a SMD, ask your Editor-in-Chief about a possible position! It never hurts.

And if you're not a Content Creator at Odyssey, you could always apply.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
