Being in a long distance relationship is tough, especially when the person you're with is living in a polar opposite area as you. My boyfriend lives in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I love visiting him because it always feels like a mini vacation, since it is so different than up North. After traveling here so much, I've realized how different being a New Yorker in the Southern atmosphere is.
1. There is barely any public transportation
Used to subways, taxi's, trains and ubers? Down in here, not so much. Yes there are forms of transportation, especially in certain cities, but nothing like how it is up north.
2. Everything moves a little slower
Being from New York, there's a sense of urgency in our blood. We always have a mission, somewhere to be or someone to see, with very little patience accompanying it. Down in the south, that isn't the case. Everyone moves at their own pace, with nothing but patience.
3. Everyone is nicer
Everyone calls each other hun, sweetie, etc. People make small talk, hold doors for each other, you name it. New York is known for being kind of assholes. Down in the South, you can strike up a conversation with anyone whether it be on the grocery line, pumping gas, or waiting for a table at a restaurant.
4. It's hard to find a decent piece of pizza anywhere.
There are dozens of places claiming they have NY pizza. Don't believe them. It's a trap.
5. Barbecue and Seafood are everywhere & Sweet Tea trumps every beverage
New York comes with many different varieties of foods, whereas in the South, you will see majority of barbecue, fried foods. You can't drive more than a mile in Myrtle Beach without seeing a seafood buffet and every restaurant and fast food place has Sweet Tea, not just McDonalds.
6. You stick out like a sore thumb
While everyone has a southern accent, yours will stick out. People down in the South can spot a New Yorker from a mile away based solely on their voice. I get fun of for saying coffee like "caw-fee" and talk like 'tawk." You'll be noticed in an instant.
