In the past several years since I have graduated from High School I have come across two types of individuals. Type 1 is the person that was born to think inside the box, to adhere to the cookie cutter mold that is society. Their goal is to graduate from college and start the career of their dreams, maybe get married to their high school sweet heart and pop out a few children down the road. They have it all figured out, they work hard for everything that they have and sometimes I envy them; however, this article isn’t about Type 1, it's about Type 2.
As a Type 2 I can tell you that we thinkabout everything but the box, don't get me wrong wehave similar dreams to Type 1. Wewant a family of ourown, but what drives usis much different from Type 1. We are driven solely by Happiness, our educational system was built uponpeople who chose to be unconventional. We are perhaps the hardest to understand because of ourdifference in beliefs and ouroutlook on education. We struggle with the idea of how the world says weshould be and about who wetruly are. We are not lazy, in fact most of us work jobs nine to fiveand sit in the same exact French class as you. Except the reason weare there is much different from why you are there. Nine times out of ten you are sitting in a class that you really didn't want to take but knew it would look good if you did, but we are sitting in that class because we want to learn French, because despite everyone in ourlives saying it was a waste of money and that weshould get a degreein teaching, nursing, or any other damned field, wetook it anyway and wedid it because it made ushappy.
To usit isn't about the money, it is about the satisfaction of completing something that wehave always wanted to do in life. Wethrive for new adventures and yearn for a world that will come to accept us. We find simple pleasures in living ourlives in complete and utter happiness. Sometimes wethink that it may be easier to give in to the way that Society says weshould be, but what a dull world it would be if wewere not ourselves. Maybe it would be easier on the people that we love, they wouldn't have to keep explaining our situation to others, or they wouldn't have to worry about our futures because to them it feels as though we are going no where.
When I as a young girl I found out that my Mother wanted to be an artist and surely if you had seen the work with your own eyes you would have agreed with me that she should have been. My Mother never got to follow her dreams and although I am sure that she loves both me and my sisters very much a part of her still wonders what her life would have been like had she done what she loved. She is my biggest support when it comes to my dream of becoming a writer and I believe that it has a lot to do with her wanting to make sure I don't have to wonder about how my life could have been. Every part of her probably wishes I would pick something a little less risky, maybe a teaching job where she knows I will have the money to survive on my own.
If only all of us (Type 2's) could be as fortunate to have the support system that I do. We could begin to make our mark on this world, one painting, one article, one musical at a time.
