The google definition of mother is “a woman in relation to a child or children to whom she has given birth.” This description does not reflect the actual importance of a mother, nor does it give her justice for who she really is. A mother is a caring, affectionate and selfless person who will protect her children at all costs. Mother’s Day is coming up this Sunday, and it is important that all mothers are recognized for their important role in bringing up the future generation and for their role in our hearts.
One of the most important characteristics of a mother is selflessness. Your mother may want that last slice of pie or cake, but she will always say that she doesn’t want it just so that you, her child, may have it. Mothers also take time out of their busy lives to make sure there is food on the table and that each of her children get the special love and care that is needed, even when she is exhausted. My mother often has anxiety going out in public. She sacrifices her own fears when I have a concert or play performance just so she can support me. This is a very selfless act, and I admire her for it.
Mothers exhibit supernatural strength when it is needed. It is a feat I have never seen in anyone else. My mother has unnatural strength when she is angry or sad. She does a great job at trying to keep herself together when something is wrong in order to spare my feelings. My mother is around the same size as me, about 4’8”. It is hard to imagine someone that small who can wreak havoc when she is angry, but she is a mother. Like all mothers, when she is angry, you'd better run.
Jesus’ mother, Mary, also exhibited great strength. Mary must have been ridiculed often for being pregnant before marriage. Of course, she was a virgin carrying the Messiah, but a lot of people probably did not believe her. In other words, she probably experienced a lot of social isolation. She had to have been a really strong mother to overcome that (and of course trust in God). When Jesus died on the cross, I’m sure it must have been heartbreaking for Mary to watch. Holding herself back and trusting in her son had to take a lot of strength.
A strong loving and caring nature are some more characteristics that mothers possess. The way that mothers hold their babies, even when they have grown, shows the good in the world that exists. The fact that mothers love their children, even when they have made stupid mistakes, is a sign of ultimate love that only a mother has. My mother always hugs me when I need it. When I was a little girl, she bandaged me up with care when I fell or hurt myself.
The aspect of tenderness is another characteristic of a mother. All mothers have to be tender when caring for their fragile babies. They use a gentle touch when cleaning up their little bundles of joy. All of the tenderness that mothers exhibit when caring for their fragile, helpless babies reflects their gentle nature, which is vital in caring for the baby. For instance, the mother’s tenderness teaches her child aspects of love.
Mother’s Day is an important day in recognizing extraordinary women. I tell my mom every day that I love her. She deserves to be recognized as special for all that she has done for me. I wanted to praise my wonderful mother, and all mothers this week in preparation for this Sunday. Happy Mother’s Day.
