What I'll Miss Most At UNCW

Graduating sounds fun and all, but I sure am going to miss UNCW.

What I'll Miss Most At UNCW

Wilmington, North Carolina has become home to me over the past four years. I came to UNCW for a degree, and I'm graduating UNCW with a degree plus four years of memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. There are parts of going to UNCW that I definitely will not miss *cough cough UNCW Parking and Hawk Wifi,* but there are way more things on the will miss side of the list.

1. Einstein Bros. Bagels

Nothing speaks to my heart like food, and nothing makes me as happy on campus as a blueberry bagel with strawberry cream cheese and that vanilla hazelnut coffee.

2. The Hockey Team

Let's face it, our hockey games are hype. The days before the hockey games are hype. At what other school does a club team parade around campus on bikes, skateboards, and roller blades blasting air horns, shaking a cowbell, and screaming into megaphones to make sure you know there's a hockey game this weekend?

3. The Campus

Maybe I'm a little biased, but I definitely think UNCW has one of the most beautiful, well-kept, photogenic (the list could go on) campuses in the nation. Props to our landscapers and maintenance crew for keeping our campus so lush and beautiful and full of life.

4. Coach Keatts

How many college coaches do you know take the microphone after the game and turn to the students to personally thank them for coming and supporting the team and tells the players to go thank the students personally before heading into the locker room? Not only has coach Keatts completely turned around our basketball program in his two years at UNCW, but he's made basketball something the students want to be involved in again.

5. Spring Break

Because there is no spring break after graduation and that's no fun.

6. The Rec Center

We can brag all we want about this rec center and who can really blame us? (*Insert sassy hair flip emoji here.*) While I'm going to miss having such a nice, big gym, I'm going to miss my body pump and yoga classes the most.

7. The People

I love the sense of community UNCW's campus has. The faculty and staff are all extremely friendly and personable, everyone uses their Southern hospitality manners, and I've never experienced an unfriendly student.

8. Beach Blast

For the past four years, I got to brag to all my friends back at their colleges about not only living at the beach but having my school throw us one giant beach party right before classes start. A party on the beach with free food and drinks, frisbees, sunglasses, raffles, and more. It's pretty much any college kid's dream.

9. The Athletics

I've skipped class just to make it to a baseball game, and I've put off my fair share of homework and studying for basketball and soccer. We might not be a big school in a big conference, but we've made a name for ourselves and I absolutely love the spirit of the students at games as well as the coaches and athletes.

10. Oozeball

Traditions are fun but this one is awesome. Plus, at what point in my life am I ever going to have an excuse to play in mud without being called childish?

11. Brother Ross

Do I like him as a person? Absolutely not. However, the smartass replies and questions that students throw back at him making him look like a fool create a quite entertaining show for me to eat my lunch at.

12. Leutze Hall

I've spent almost three whole years in this building now, and it's become home away from home at UNCW. Between the classrooms and the lounge area and the front steps and the fountain on the side, I love everything about this building (except the central heating and air that seems to be bipolar). Plus, it allows me to avoid Chancellor's Walk completely.

13. The Squirrels

True life: UNCW Squirrels are ruthless. They climb on our bikes, they climb into our trashcans, and I even witnessed one steal food from behind out of a a cookout tray sitting beside a girl. They never fail to give me a good giggle though.

14. The Clocktower

Have I mentioned how photogenic UNCW is? I love the clock tower and its cheerful song playing at noon and it's hourly reminders. It's a good spot for last minute studying right before class or people watching or just simply talking with friends.

15. Wagsgiving

Going back to traditions here. It's generic Thanksgiving food but one simply does not miss Wagsgiving.

16. The Sidewalk Chalk

While not all of our chalkings are this cute in meaning, I love that instead of flyers posted everywhere we use our sidewalks to get messages across. Props to the people that can draw and write that well with chalk, too.

17. The Professors

I don't know about anyone else, but I've had the best luck with my professors. They've all been extremely helpful and open. I also don't think many students can say that their professors have a band that plays real gigs. As Dr. Olsen (the keyboard player and department chair for UNCW Communication Studies) would say: "Peace out, rock on."

18. Student Discounts

You mean I can't get my free bowl of queso at On The Border anymore? Maybe just one more year of keeping up with my one card won't hurt.

19. My Sense of Security

UNCW has become my safe place and my cushion. It's my you're still a student so take it easy on yourself place. I'm about to go out in the real world and that's a pretty scary thought.

20. My People.

I've made some of the best friends I could've ever imagined in the four years I've been at UNCW. If I added a picture for all of them, you'd be scrolling for at least an hour. I met two of my absolute best friends, and I've become part of a group that I now call my family. I've lived and loved with each and every one of them and among all the other things I'll miss at UNCW, it'll be the people that have been with me to experience all of them.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
