What Having A Sister Really Means

Sisters are built-in best friends. Sisters have the ability to make each other laugh, cry, and love — all in the same day. Sisters have a way of knowing when you are bullshitting them. They can read each other's emotions better than anyone else.

Sisters know what to say when you have a bad day or do poorly on an exam. Sisters put things in perspective when you think you’ve made a huge mistake.

Sisters have a way of understanding what needs to be said and what doesn’t need to be said. And if that boundary is crossed, sisters apologize and move on. Sisters are proud of each other, no matter what, because they've seen each other grow through the years.

Sisters know which movies you will like, what songs to recommend to you, what outfits will look good on you, and what to say when mom and dad are being annoying. Sisters help each other with makeup and hair, even if they're both inept at these things.

Sisters text each other immediately if one misses something weird mom or dad does because laughter is greater when shared. Sisters have inside jokes that last so long they forget when the joke began. Sisters also binge-watch guilty-pleasure shows together (*cough, cough* "Cops and Survivor").

Sisters take pictures until they take one they both look good in. Sisters also take endless Snapchats together.

It can be hard when a sister moves on to a different chapter of life, such as high school, college, or graduating from college. The thing that matters, though, is that even if you’re not together as much as you were when you lived together, you still make the effort, even though proximity may no longer play a strong role in your friendship.

Sisters trust each other’s judgment. My sister’s opinion means more to me than anyone else’s. If I ask for her opinion on something, I wholeheartedly trust her judgment.

Sisters can be stingy with compliments. But I know secretly, my sister thinks I’m funny. One time, one rare time, my sister told me I was funny. I’ll never forget it. I think I may have cried from laughing so hard. Sisters, regardless of age, look up to and respect each other. Sisters are confidants, as well as role models, no matter who is older or younger.

Sisters make every aspect of life better. Mom makes you go to the grocery store? Sisters go together. Long car rides? Sisters are there to talk to and mess around with. Going to coffee shops to get stuff done? Sisters are there, working right next to you in your favorite corner.

To me, having a sister means late-night drives and new experiences. It means having an exercise partner, knowing each other’s friends, and communicating through laughter. My sister is my best friend, and I’d be lost without her.

Meg, you may have been waiting for a year for me to write an article about you, and your time has finally arrived. Happy 16th Birthday, Meggie. I’ll love you always.

(I hope that you can still love me after this picture, as well. But you said it best, through fake middle parts, being confused for twins and more, "Sisters 4 lyfe.")

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
