We have come to a very dark place in our lives today. We mourn the loss of the many who were killed in the recent school shooting in Oregon. We also need a reality check on what else is going on. There have been 45 school shootings just this year in the U.S. This is too many! Hell, one is too many. We have shunned and pushed away a kid who is Muslim and made a clock. We have disrespected our police and our military. Yes, in police brutality is a problem, but some of it is caused by the constant bashing and disrespect of police. We are starting to outcast people just because of their race and heritage. We think that we can disobey laws just for our self-worth and value. White privilege has become very relevant and detrimental to our society. Facebook has become a social battleground where people believe that they can say what ever they want and not have backlash. Since Facebook has evolved into this battleground people have become political experts and have decided to run against one another, rather than being friends. Oftentimes these disputes and fights we see on all social media, are very violent and can get out of control very quickly. Now I know that we all have different opinions on different social issues and that is okay. Not everyone will share the same opinion. But if we have seen or learned anything from this latest school shooting it is that people are taking their own opinions and beliefs too far.
So I ask, what has happened to the golden rule? You know, treat others the way that you want to be treated. Because apparently it this rule was thrown out the window long ago. I grew up with my parents teaching me this rule and so throughout my entire life I have always thought of and followed the implications of this rule. As my life has gone on, I have seen more and more people eliminate this rule out of their every day lives and I wonder why that is. Could you imagine what our world would be like with the golden rule as the law of the land? We would live in a utopia. Granted utopias really don't exist, but there is hope. But first, we need to climb out of this deep deep hole we have dug ourselves into. This hole we are in is from all of the hatred and ignorance we push towards one another. We have let the idea of hostility towards everyone who is different and doesn't understand us into our heads. The only way we can get out of this hole is if we work together. Now, this will not be easy, but it is the only way. So I ask you not to put your hatred and difference aside for just until we we get out of the hole. I ask you to put your differences aside and become neighbors and friends with everyone despite where they come from and their beliefs.
To my generation, we can lead the way in this effort. But to do that we have to stop being the worst generation ever. We have to stop acting like nothing is wrong with our society, when everything is. We need to stop the hate towards one another. We need to put our phones down and look at the bigger picture, rather than sit around and do nothing with our lives. We need to stop feeling entitled to everything. Nothing is just going to fall in our lap, we need to step up and take action and do the things we love. We need to support one another and believe that anything is possible. This world is cruel, but together we can make it a place where people want to live again. We are in this life together and I'm sick of hearing how millennials truly suck. So let's stop being the biggest screw-ups in history.
We need to bring the love for one another that we once had back and unite. We are the UNITED States, after all. So bring the golden rule back into your life and love one another, then maybe, just maybe we will be able to climb out of this never-ending hole we are in.
