8 Things Growing Up In Alabama Taught Me

Home is where your heart is

"The South: where everyone pulls over to let funeral progressions pass, we don't have firefiles we have lightnin bugs, Y'all is a proper noun, Ain't is a word, chicken is fired, biscuits come with gravy, sweet tea is the house wine, shopping carts are buggies, you never disrespect your elders, we talked to stranger, we wave a lot, we love pearls, porches and peanuts, and blessin' hearts."

I believe that quote describes everything in a nutshell about the South. Growing up in in Alabama taught me a lot about who I am, how to act, just in general about life. Here is a list of the top 8 things growing up in Alabama taught me:

1. Stand up for what you believe in

Be a follower and a leader, if you believe in something with a passion don't back down. Know what you want a go for it.

2. Accents are sweet

Even if people make fun of southern accents, embrace it, love it, enjoy it. Having an accents shows where you are from and I am proud to have an accent that tells people I am from Alabama.

3. Family means the world

No it isn't just your immediate family, it is everyone. From your third cousins to your family you are only related to by marriage. They may not like you, you may not like them, but they will always love you and will always be there for you when you need them.

4. Manners

From the day you could start talking, you learn the rights and wrongs in respect. Yes ma'am, No ma'am, Yes sir, and No sir. Please and thank you. Always be polite!! Growing up in the South you are never getting away with not saying your Yes ma'am, No sir responses. Adults won't let you walk away without saying that at the yes of your answer.

5. NO SODA! NO POP!

In the South we keep it simple, it is just Coke, everything is Coke. "What would you like to drink?" "Coke" "What kind?" "Dr. Pepper," that is the conversation that you have every time you would like a drink.

6. Summer is the only season

Summer time is the best time! You don't spend your days inside when the sun is out you are out. God made the sun so that we could use it and that is just what we did growing up in the South. Even when the sun goes down you are still outside catching lightnin bugs and looking at the stars.

7. Football isn't a game it is a lifestyle

Alabama football means the world, you don't say hello in Alabama you greet someone with ROLL TIDE! Growing up in Alabama you know Saturdays are meant for football and only watching Alabama.

8. Last but not least GOD

In Alabama you know Saturdays are for football, and Sundays are for God. No matter rain or shine, you don't miss church Sunday morning.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
