I wasn’t even alive when "Friends" began in 1994 and was only 8 when the show stopped in 2004, but I am a dedicated fan of the popular show. I started watching "Friends" around the age of 10 because my mom thought I was mature. I didn’t understand a lot of the comedic material from the show, but I always laughed along like I understood what was going on. Towards the end of middle school, the jokes on the show began to make sense, and I laughed along because I actually knew what they were talking about. I learned to love the characters and wanted to be a member of their tight-knit group. All of them hold a close place to my heart. I wanted to be Rachel Green. Chandler Bing is my spirit animal. I want to be best friends with Joey Tribbiani. Phoebe Buffey is honestly the coolest of them all. I would love for Monica Gellar to teach me how to stay organized (it’s horrendous). And last but not least, I would love for Ross Gellar to be my life coach because he’s made plenty of mistakes (way too many), and he’d probably be great with advice. The six of them, in my opinion, are the epitome of a squad.
I grew up with "Friends," and I have seen the reruns so many times that I can quote them like there’s no tomorrow. "Friends" is more than a funny TV show, though. The show began in the mid-90s and broke down barriers. They changed sitcom forever with the TV show focusing on a group of 20-something people instead of the usual family. There were real issues that people faced. There was a Lesbian wedding on the show. Divorce was a prominent theme. Having a child with a friend was a topic that arose. Trying to support oneself with having a minimum wage job was a problem. Parents don’t always know best also was demonstrated throughout the show. "Friends" was not afraid of crossing lines or bringing up taboo subjects, but did so in a funny way. I have learned so many important and not-so important life lessons.
1. It’s OK to take a bubble bath as an adult.
2. What the Holiday Armadillo is.
3. What real friendship is.
4. Unagi means always aware.
5. How to dance.
6. How to tell people to quiet down.
7. Saying goodbye is difficult.
8. What a paleontologist is.
9. Family is important.
10. Playing with your food is okay.
11. Men can pull off blue lipstick.
12. Life is tough.
13. Pheobe Buffay is queen.
14. We were on a break!
I’m not the first person who has requested a "Friends" reunion, and I know that I will not be the last. There was a small reunion of Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and Lisa Kudrow that occurred on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" last year that made me so happy. I love how they are great friends in real life. Courtney was even Jennifer’s maid of honor at her wedding, and Jennifer is the godmother of Courtney’s child. However great that was, for me at least, it wasn’t enough. A true "Friends" reunion will include all six of the main characters, and I am optimistic that there is still a possibility that this could happen.
