There’s assumption out there that if you stand for feminism you obviously hate men. I find that to be one of the most ironic statements I’ve ever heard. The thinking behind it is basically that because feminism sounds “feminine,” and it’s meant to help women become more powerful than men, that means feminism is bad. Which that thinking just encourages the idea that anything to do with women is bad. It’s bad to think like a woman; it’s bad to support women; it’s bad to have words start with root words that are related to females. There was this brief time in 2014 where anti-feminist’s decided to call themselves “meninist’s.” They defined it as equality for both men and women. For one, “meninism” isn’t a real word and two, they were feminist’s with a douchier name! Feminism is defined as “the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.” So some douche came up with the word “meninism” because he didn’t like the fact the feminism started with fem. Pushing the fact that to be a woman is bad. The sad part is it caught on like wildfire. It was a mini-movement in and of itself. Making a mockery of the strides that feminism had taken in the past few years, and within all of history.
But here’s why feminism is not anti-men, because the movement is not to just propel women above and beyond the likes of men. Feminism is the great equalizer that we haven’t had in the past, it allows us to call out the sexist things that women have allowed to happen. It let’s us have a voice against the unjust things that happen to both women and men. There are so many unrealistic standards for both genders; it’s unfair and dehumanizing in a way. We can’t become these perfect beings who look good, act better, and never make a wrong move. Humans have this innate ability to mess everything up and that’s okay. The best thing to do is to keep moving forward and let people be who they are. That’s what feminism is about, it’s supposed to give people an equal opportunity for the things they want. And hold people accountable for the wrongs they’ve done. Letting people make their own choices whether we personally agree with them or not. Feminism is supposed to give everyone a chance to be better and equal.
