What Your Favorite Athens Restaurant Says About You

Along with many others, its restaurant scene is just another reason why Athens is good for the soul.

What Your Favorite Athens Restaurant Says About You

With such a wide selection of restaurants to choose from, a wide array of factors come into play when deciding where you’ll end up dining. Whether it is brunch, a late afternoon snack, full-out dinner or dessert, we all know there is more to a restaurant than the cuisine itself. The atmosphere in general and the crowd that frequents that spot are all details that determine not only where you go, but hint at what type of person you are.

Trapeze.

First on the list because it’s an obvious Athens favorite, it’s a low-key, pub style joint with a little bit of everything. Featuring Terrapin and Creature Comforts, its extensive drink menu is sure to satisfy whether you prefer dark or light ale, while classic menu items with a twist attract those looking for something filling and flavorful. This is the go-to restaurant for people who want to relax and unwind — either after a game in Sanford or during a slow afternoon on the weekend. Finding yourself in Trapeze says you want quality food, without dressing up, or paying anything outside of the realm of reasonable.

Taqueria Del Sol.

It means you like Mexican, but without the mariachi band music and all of the grease-ridden meat dripping out of a taco shell. You don't have to pay the price to enjoy authentic Mexican, and as a college student, why should you? Most popular after dark, Taqueria attracts the chip & guac and salted-rim margarita lovers, and has arguably the best enchiladas of any local Mexican spot. It’s pretty clear that if you end up here, it means you not only like a mild (in terms of spicy) dish, but you have decided to forgo the cheaper (in terms of quality) alternatives such as Moe’s and Willy’s…because you’re classier than that.

Speakeasy.

Just like its name suggests, it’s recluse, in the sense that most people don't know it exists. Perhaps one of Athens’ greatest hidden secrets, Speakeasy is a tapas restaurant and bar, and fits the bill for a special occasion. Candle-lit tables are situated in an upstairs-only restaurant overlooking downtown, and small plates make it ideal for sharing in large groups. It’s for those who like privacy, and a space that is quiet enough to converse with everyone around you.  It's safe to say if this is your restaurant of choice—you are a social butterfly who likes to please everyone, as this is a great place to go with a group, knowing everyone can get something different and be happy.

Last Resort.

With a reputation as renowned as that of Last Resort, you know you’re in for something good whether you go for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Regardless of the time of day, it says you’re willing to pay the price for the experience. The food is bomb on its own, but the service is always quick, and you can’t go wrong with a cozy atmosphere complete with exposed brick and gallery paintings from local artists. This isn’t the place to go if you’re trying to get in touch with your “hip” side; it isn’t meant to be trendy. It’s for those who appreciate a traditionally southern, home-cooked tasting meal with a subtle elegance.

Big City Bread Cafe.

It's for those who know what they’re doing when it comes to brunch. Don’t let this place fool you; you won't be floating the mainstream here. It’s an eclectic style café with a contemporary vibe, but make no mistake, it is by no means a vintage, hipster, hangout. It’s an “order on your own” meets “sit down” restaurant, perfect for someone who makes brunch an event. On-the-go people may be better suited at Dunkin, as it gives off the whole “come in and stay a while” feeling. You’re someone who likes to try new things, but recognize quality ingredients when you taste them.

The Grill.

You might be an alcoholic if this is your restaurant of choice in all of Athens. Most commonly frequented between the hours of 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., it’s a favorite late night joint famous for feta fries and burgers notorious for clogged arteries, but it nonetheless hits the spot. You could’ve gone to Waffle House or Little Italy, but why stumble into any establishment without milkshakes to begin with? When in the Classic City, you opt for a classic late night.

Shokitini.

Popular for sushi and Karaoke, this is the place for those who are outgoing. Whether it is in the sense that you like to try new types of sushi rolls or like to sing obnoxiously to a group with disco lights flashing, you don’t mind getting out of your comfort zone. You’re not afraid to embarrass yourself and are able to laugh at yourself, all while enjoying fried rice smothered in yum yum sauce.

Five Bar.

This is the place to go for those who are refined and like to impress. Whether you take your parents here to show that you know a nice restaurant (despite your endless collection of receipts from Chik-fil-A and Chipotle that suggest otherwise), or take a date…you pay for the ambiance, if you will. Steaks seem to taste even better when you’re in a fancy setting and there are massive glass chandeliers hanging overhead. One thing is for sure, you won’t walk out disappointed. Broke? Maybe. But not disappointed.

Pauley's.

You might be maintenance, but you pregame in style. You like your wine with a price tag of over $20 and complemented with a filling and typically sweet dessert crepe. This is where the preliminary celebrations usually take place, because we all know pizza washed down with a round of shots just won’t cut it. It says you prefer to pregame with a glass instead of a solo cup, and like running into people you know; you can consider yourself a rare case if you’ve ever gotten in and out of Pauley’s without seeing someone you know.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
