What To Expect In Your First Week Of College

Moving into college can be extremely nerve-wracking but it can also be the most exciting thing ever. The first week of college will be a whirlwind of emotions for every freshman in college, and sometimes your expectations of your first week will not be reality. Here is what it will really be like your first week of college.

Moving in and unpacking everything you just packed is the most draining thing ever.

You will start out really excited to start making your new room and wanting to open up your new bedspread and the string lights every single girl needs to have in their room. But, within maybe an hour or two of unpacking you will feel extremely exhausted and ready to take a nap.

At parties, no one will care that in high school you had a 4.0 GPA and were captain of three different teams.

It's time to realize that high school was high school and now you are in college. Yes, when you get to know people they will learn about what happened in high school, but absolutely nobody at a party will care how successful you were in high school so just find a new convo starter.

Laundry piles up faster than you ever thought it would.

When your mom is doing your laundry, you never realize just how many clothes you go through in a day. But now that it is all up to you, suddenly it feels like you have the Mount Everest of clothes after only about three days.

You really did not need every piece of clothing you have in your small dorm closet.

When you were packing there were so many "what-if's" and suddenly now you have 17 white t-shirts and a sweater you have not worn since you were 12.

Classes will be boring, but you still have to go if you want to pass.

You will have an 8 a.m. class where the teacher is older than George Washington and drones on and on about how important calculus will be in your life and continuing to explain derivatives as if they make sense. But, when you skip class you will suddenly feel three weeks behind and if you keep up the habit you will suddenly have a D in the class and will be begging for extra credit.

Sometimes you just need a little alone time, no matter how much of a people person you are.

As much of a social butterfly as you may be, the first week of college is so hectic and crazy with meeting new people and trying to find ways around campus and trying to join a million clubs, and at some point all you will want to do is go lay alone in bed and watch your old favorite movie and just be alone for a moment.

You’re not going to be best friends with your roommate, or the girl across the hall. You may hate them and that is okay.

When you first move in, the people around you automatically will become your best friend. And then suddenly after talking to them a few times you realize the only thing you have in common is sharing a hall. It is okay to not get along with everyone and it is okay to not be BFFs with your roommate or anyone you met at orientation, you will find your people eventually though.

The communal bathroom will be disgusting, especially during those first few weeks when every stall has been puked in.

I think this is quite self explanatory.

You’re going to miss your parents, so call them and make sure you say you love them.

It's okay to say you miss them. They have helped you through the last 18 years of your life and it is normal to get a little homesick and miss them. And your mom is probably waiting by her phone all day for you to make the first call to her so she doesn't seem needy, so just call her and say you love her and miss her.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
