What We Don't Take For Granted During Syracuse Winters

The cold never bothered us anyways.

What We Don't Take For Granted During Syracuse Winters
Karsen Cinquepalmi

Being a girl from Texas, when a little ice hit the ground, the whole community went into a state of panic and chaos. Schools shut down, you did not even dare to drive anywhere, and the shelves at the grocery stores looked like people were preparing for a zombie apocalypse. But, spending at least two winters in Syracuse has definitely made me stop taking things for granted, especially when it comes to the weather. Here are some things that students definitely make the most of on this campus.

1. Random 50 degree days in February.

Disclaimer: This does not usually happen at this time of year, but we were blessed with a miracle this time around. Although this may still be considered around the "chilly" side, you will find people sitting out on the porches while attempting to break out the shorts. I mean, if it is going to be nice, might as well make the most of it.

2. Not having to zip up your coat.

This may not seem like a big deal, but being able to walk around with your coat unzipped while letting the air actually touch your body is a good thing. Usually, you are pelted in the face with snow while walking to class but once it becomes time to unzip that coat, you know that spring time will soon be upon us.

3.Texting gloves.

There is no worse feeling than not being able to feel your fingers after whipping out your phone to switch your tunes from One Direction to Bieber. What is the solution? Texting gloves. You will be able to still enjoy the uses of your mobile device while keeping your fingers nice and toasty warm.

4. Fuzzy socks.

You will not survive the harsh winters of Syracuse without the warm comfort of fuzzy socks. These feel like plush heaven on your feet and will keep you cozy for whatever it is you may be doing. Whether it is lounging around your apartment or deciding to man-up and take on the winter storm for Starbucks, you will not be disappointed with this specific fashion choice.

5. Tea.

If you would have told me before coming to Syracuse that I would enjoy hot tea, I would have called you insane. Now this beverage is one of my best friends. Going from harsh subzero temperatures into academic buildings that feel like a sauna can easily give you a sore throat. If I am not feeling my best, I can always count of this beverage to warm me up and soothe me.

Count your blessings, kids, and stay warm. Hopefully, it won't be a rough one.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
