Valentine’s Day often gets a bad rap. It’s known as the holiday for couples: red and pink balloons, teddy bears, and chocolate boxes. Singles hibernate for the day, hiding from the love-crazed partners and the reminder that they have no one to celebrate with. Married couples go out for a date night with dinner and a movie, or even spend it with the kids, but you may ask, what do single college students do with their time on Valentine’s Day?
When we should be studying for our exams and reading up on long articles, we binge watch, well…everything. We feel no guilt. Whether it’s finishing off the romantic comedies section on Netflix, or re-watching as many episodes of "The Bachelor" as possible, drowning ourselves in our guilty pleasure of movie addiction is key to a great solo Valentine’s night.
And of course, what else goes better with movies than movies? Food. Here in Syracuse, we go straight for Calios, where you can put anything imaginable into a folded piece of pizza dough for a mouthful of greatness, and then finish it off with some sweets from Insomnia Cookies. You don’t even have to share. I won’t tell anyone.
And hey, why not make it an event? Ladies, invite over the girlfriends and gossip about crushes while you daydream about all of the discounted chocolate you’re going to buy the next day at the drug store. Guys, have the bros over to watch the game, eat some Cheetos, and enjoy some quality man time.
"Oh, it's just me, myself and I…I don't need anything to get me through the night, except the beat that's in my heart.” So to all of you single college students out there, there’s nothing wrong with being alone on Valentine’s Day. You have plenty of time to find the love of your life.Although we may be good at secluding ourselves from society on this special day, call your mom and tell her you love her. Tell your brother or sister you’re glad to have them in your life, and remind yourself that your future love is out there thinking about you too! So until then, Netflix on!
