Have you ever woken up and wondered, "What day is it?" Have you ever laid in bed, watching the clock change numbers? When does it click for you? Is it when the alarm goes off and you realize it's a Monday? Or is it when the garbage truck rumbles by and you know that means it's the start of the work week? Perhaps, it's when the hallways of a college dorm are quite loud at eight in the morning?
That's what it is for me. My floor mates are not being obnoxiously loud. But after spending two days where the loud times are between eleven at night and four in the morning, Monday mornings can seem like a rock concert. The bass of people's doors closing as they hustle to brush their teeth in the community bathroom, the chorus of feet running down the hall because at least one person overslept, and let's not forget, the melody of good mornings groggily echoing down the corridor.
When I first looked into this school, I swore up and down that I would not survive living in traditional dorms. I absolutely would not shower where other people shower. I would not leave my door open to talk to people walking through the hall. And I certainly would not enjoy the experience when the school ignored my request for a suite style room and placed me in a traditional residence hall where I would have to shower with shoes and brush my teeth next to other girls as we awkwardly avoided eye contact in the mirror.
Well, guess what.
I did all of those things and more. I shower every day with shoes. I leave my door open when I'm not sleeping or working intensely on homework. And one of the best parts about college is that they placed me in this traditional dorm where I have to stare into the sink when I spit so as not to watch my next door neighbor spit blue paste into the basin next to me.
The traditional dorms are where I met my best friend of the past two years. The traditional dorms are where our friends get together to watch movies or play games or just hang out. The traditional dorms, to me, are where the social life is. Forget parties or the football games, just come to my room and you're for sure to count at least four people lounging around, talking, laughing, and just enjoying college.
What day is it? In the traditional dorms? It's either a Monday or a Friday. Sometimes both on the same day.
