An Open Letter From People in the Serving Industry

We literally live to please you.

An Open Letter From People in the Serving Industry
The Grindstone

We are your hairdressers, your bartenders, your flight attendants and your waitresses / waiters. Our lives revolve around pleasing you. With that in mind, we have a few things we’d like to say:

We just want to start this letter by telling you that we love you. You are the reason that we have income and we cannot express how thankful we are for your business.

However, it’s really easy to forget a few things when it comes to us.

As individuals, we are only one person. We want to be there for every one of you, but there are times when we fall a little bit behind the ball. It can be stressful, and we understand that you may be unhappy, but all we ask for is a little patience and understanding. In retrospect, we are performers whose requirement entails juggling fifteen balls while unicycling on a high wire above a pool of man-eating piranhas. Just like actual performers, we’re going to drop a ball or two occasionally, but we promise to do as much as we can to go above and beyond the expectations to make it up to you. However, these tasks can be done more efficiently without pressure and impatience from our beloved spectators.

Have you ever had one of those days where nothing in the world seems to go right and even the smallest comments or facial expressions can send you into a spiral of endless tears and stress eating?

Well, we have those days too.

A lot.

Often times, a lot of us are pulling incredibly long amounts of hours on our feet and, as much as we try, it can be hard to have our smiles on 100% of the time. In these cases, we want you to know that we still love you very much, and you shouldn’t take any sort of offense if our smile slips into a frown for a mere second. If we are having a bad day, it is probably because we’re human - humans tend to get emotional from time to time. Sometimes those emotions can’t be hidden behind a fake smile and Barbie-esque personality.

In these rare cases that our emotions project during our shifts, we know that we seem like the worst servers ever. And we know you that you probably think we’re crap ball servers with personalities similar to that of dirt. But that is not who we are at all. Receiving a negative comment that picks apart our personality and image when we’re having a bad day is the single drop that ends up overflowing the entire water glass of our sanity (We don't like to admit the countless nights of stress or emotional drinking, eating, and yelling at television).

We are humans - not machines, not superheroes.

We, just like every hard working human on this planet, deserve respect in our line of work. When we see you tip us unfairly or show up to your appointment thirty minutes late with a hot Starbucks coffee in your hand, we feel very hurt. The last thing we want to do as servers is to fail to meet the hopes and expectations of our loyal customers, but when we are not respected, we feel like we have been used and abused (and not to mention completely stiffed).

We are expected to multitask with many more responsibilities than we can handle and we, just like you, have bad days where we can’t manage to get anything right, but will admit that receiving respect and support from you help us to push through all of our blood blisters and burnt hands and hungry tummies. We love you.

Alas, we wish we had more time to tell you everything about how we feel, but we do hope that you took a moment to stop and look at us with a new perspective and sense of understanding. Although we are living to serve and please you, a little gratitude is nice at times, and it helps us to not only perform better, but to treat you better as well.

When the gloves are off and the aprons are hung, we still acknowledge our love for the drive of customer service. Taking care of you is all we care about from the moment we clock in to the minute you leave, and even after that. The customer service field is a unique one of trial, error, and experimentation, and we will continue to search for the best ways to bring light to your life so long as you continue to support us by giving us the opportunity to serve you.

We are in a social circle of life. We all contribute and we all take in.

Thank you for letting us serve you.

Thank you for understanding who we are as hard working people.

Thank you for being awesome.

Sincerely,

Us.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
