If you've been connected to the internet at all in the past week, you'll know that Justin Bieber has posted not one, but TWO throwback pictures of him and Selena on Instagram. The first, originally without a caption, was a picture of the two sitting flirty on a four-wheeler, and the cyber-world went wild with questions about their relationship status. Since being posted, Justin has updated the caption to say "Just a throwback calm down." The second captioned "Crazy throwback," features the two walking down the sidewalk holding hands. These both follow the video of Justin serenading Selena with "My Girl" in a hotel bar a couple weeks back. So naturally, we're all going nuts over a possible Jelena reunion. Why, you ask? Because, in spirit we are all Justin and Selena.
You see, Selena is Justin's "one who got away."
The two have always been open about how they feel about one another, expressing the utmost respect for each other, and even suggesting separately that they would be open to getting back together in the future. Seems like the ideal ex-situation, which is why the world is pulling for these two.
Justin and Selena are the perfect examples of the puppy love we all once had. You meet, fall in love at a young age, and think everything is going to be perfect forever. And it is for a little while until it's not. For whatever reason, life gets in the way, and what once felt like forever now feels like it can't last another second.
Granted, Justin and Selena fell in love under greatly different circumstances than most of our brace-face, first-kiss, freshman-in-high-school romances. And I haven't spoken to either of them about it personally, but I'd be willing to bet that they broke up under some pretty different circumstances as well. But is a super stardom love affair really all that different from our awkward first love?
Much like us normal folks' first love, Selena and Justin grew up together. Sure, their dates looked a little different, and instead of mom waiting outside the movie theater, it was more like a couple dozen paparazzi, but they met at a young age and experienced a lot of life's firsts together. You don't just go on and forget the first person to make you laugh, cry, and feel in ways you didn't even know you were capable of, and these two Hollywood love birds were certainly no different.
And when it all came crashing down, I'd say Justin handled it just about as well as most young people do. He had his crazy, I-don't-care moments. He lost himself for a little bit, as most of us do. Then miraculously, he grew up. He took responsibility for the kind of person he was becoming, manned up, and made some changes. Just like us, it took losing something he really cared about to step back, assess himself, and take the proper steps towards a more positive lifestyle.
As for Selena, she took the higher route. She never spoke badly about Justin, and simply stood by what she saw in him the whole time 2like any good, sane, rare ex-girlfriend would do. Kudos to you, Selena.
Now, a couple years later, the two are in much healthier places individually. They've grown up, done some soul searching, and if they decide to get back together, they'll be fulfilling the dreams of every girl out there who fell in the same kind of puppy love that they did. Justin, Selena may be the one who got away, but I'd be willing to bet she'll give you another shot.
