Who ever determined that beauty is defined by our appearances? I proudly beg to differ. I never understood the significance of being pretty or ugly; why is “ugly” something that we label people with? It is hurtful and shallow minded. Personally, I think that everyone here on this earth is gorgeous. Our bodies may not have been created equally but our souls have. Physical appearances are not ugly; they are just different than others.
It is one hundred percent okay to be different than someone. In fact, why would you want to be exactly like another person? That takes away your personal awesomeness and excitement you bring to this un-prioritized society we live in. Just think for a moment… What would it be like if we all looked exactly the same because someone decided that one thing and one thing only (being our appearances) defines beauty?
Boring. It would be horribly boring.
With that being said, I know I sound like the typical person who says, “looks aren’t everything” but they are really not. When I receive a compliment on my appearance, I am grateful and appreciative, but when I receive compliments on my personality, kindness, and my heart I am flattered and those kind of compliments stick with me. Those words are the ones that matter. Being admired for just who you are is a feeling that is not describable. You just have to experience it yourself. Ten years from now my looks, your looks, all of our looks are not going to matter. What is going to matter is what you have to give to this world.
We are all living here on earth with a common goal of being happy so in order to maintain happiness we have to contribute positivity to society. This does not include labeling someone as “ugly” because you do not agree with the way they look. We need to start focusing on the things that actually matter in this life. The way we treat each other over looks is saddening. No one is the same, no one is perfect so together lets accept that and see past all the looks.
We are so consumed with how we appear to others physically that we forget to live our lives, and we forget to live our lives for ourselves. We have begun living for others, for their acceptance and at the end of the day that is not what matters. Being beautiful is not defined solely on how we look but rather who we are as individuals and what we can contribute to society.
Everyone is beautiful in his or her own way and that may sound overly optimistic but I am actually a realist. That is real, a true statement. Everyone is beautiful to someone, but fortunately I can see the beauty in everyone. Let’s not use the dictionary definition of beauty but lets create our own definition and rewrite it. Let’s give “beautiful” a new definition and define the word by who we are.
I am beautiful. You are beautiful. We all are. And I dare anyone to tell you differently.
