'Twas The Week Before Finals

A college senior's advice for the dreaded finals' week

I remember my first finals week. I was a stressed out freshman, obsessed with keeping my 4.0 GPA. Man, has that totally gone out the window. But while I don't necessarily remember how well I did on those exams, I mostly remember how stressed I was. So this is for all of you, from freshmen to seniors, to help guide you through finals week and those dreaded comprehensive final exams.

First, know your finals schedule. Learn it, live it, love it. This may seem kind of "duh," but it's first and foremost in your finals planning. If you know your hardest final is on Monday in the afternoon, you'll want study hard for that final the weekend before because you have the least amount of time to study for it. Then you can study for your easier finals after that big one is out of the way.

Second, make a study schedule. I personally get really OCD with mine, by planning my study days down to the hour. But that's what works for me, and I can make sure I'm getting everything done exactly the way I need it to be. Plan out what subject you'll be studying for when, and for how long. And commit to this study plan! Let it run your life for a few days, don't just make it and then forget about it. Also, don't forget to pencil in study breaks, even if they're just for 15 minutes. Your brain needs to rest even for just a little bit.

Finally, get enough sleep. This may sound crazy since all-nighters are most popular during finals week. But studies have proven over and over that your brain performs at its best when it's had proper rest. If you start studying far enough in advance, you won't need to cram all night the night before the test anyways. So do yourself a favor and abandon the all-nighters.

Most importantly, please remember that you are not defined by a single grade, or even a handful of grades. No single test will determine your future, and you are not defined by your exams. Nevertheless, do your best and give 'em hell.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
