It's the second month of being in quarantine, and the outbreak of COVID-19 is still prominent. With many states easing restrictions, a lot of people wonder how much longer the quarantine will be in effect, some experts saying that it could be two years before things return back to normal. One thing that many people have been doing in quarantine is learning to do things themselves, whether it's learning to cook, cutting or dyeing their own hair, or painting their nails.
However, what many people may not be considering is that some people are also trying to learn more makeup techniques during the quarantine.
I know what you're thinking: why would anyone want to wear makeup when they're stuck in the house and no one is going to see them?
But that's actually the perfect reason for why some women, including me, are choosing to wear makeup during this time.
Some of us have personally struggled with learning how to put on makeup. I've just started to learn more about how to highlight my cheeks with different shades of makeup and how to use liquid eyeliner. Before quarantine, I never had time to try learning different makeup techniques.
But now with so many brands like Clinique opening up virtual meetings for tutorials on makeup, I have plenty of time to try it out.
The tutorials are also better than watching videos online since a few of them are actual meetings with professionals who can give you tips as though you were meeting them in person.
And I know that no one will see me wear makeup unless I go for a walk or have to make a trip to the grocery store, but that's why this is the ideal time. If I make any mistakes, I won't have to worry about feeling embarrassed if other people see my makeup disaster. The only people who will see me are my family members, and they will quickly point out any mistakes that I need to correct.
You probably remember making at least one mistake when learning how to put on makeup.
My biggest one was where I decided to use bronzer, thinking it was no different than wearing blush. I then went out in public for a full hour before one of my family members pointed out that I looked orange. I can't tell you how mortified I was after going a whole hour without noticing! But now that I'm stuck at home, I don't have to worry as much about making any mistakes.
What many people also don't understand is that wearing makeup can give you a sense of normalcy. Before the outbreak, wearing makeup was a daily routine, just as brushing my hair was. After the outbreak, most of my routine, such as getting up early to go to the school that I was student teaching at, was broken. And with so much uncertainty, just like everyone else, I've started feeling more anxiety during this time.
But wearing makeup helps me feel like I can keep some of the routine that I had prior to the outbreak intact.
Sure, there are some days where I won't wear as much makeup or may choose to not wear any. But wearing makeup helps me feel like I don't have to lose all of the old routines that I had prior to the outbreak.
And wearing makeup also helps me to feel more confident and in control. Just like how many women are learning how to dye or cut their own hair to gain a sense of control back during this time, makeup gives me the same feeling. I feel like I can be in control of how I look throughout the day and have something that I haven't lost from the outbreak.
Call it whatever you want, but wearing makeup while in quarantine is really no different than deciding to dye your hair pink.
It's also a perfect chance for me to enjoy trying something new during this time. I can't tell you how much I've learned from trying on makeup during this time that I never would have learned before the quarantine.
And it's nice to feel that you can have a girl's day with some of your family members that you normally might have had with your friends. It helps you feel that you're not missing out on something that you did before the outbreak and gives you a sense of normalcy back.
Plus, what most people don't realize is that women don't always wear makeup to attract men.
We sometimes wear makeup because it can give us a boost of confidence just like the confidence you would get from wearing a new outfit. It can even help us highlight features that we already have such as having a unique eye color. Makeup can help bring out these features and can even boost our self-esteem.
And I'm not telling other women that they need to wear makeup during this time or at any time after the outbreak. If you don't want to wear makeup and want to let your skin breathe while in quarantine, go ahead. If you have chosen to never wear makeup and completely go natural then that's great.
However, there are some girls like me who choose to wear makeup while in quarantine because we miss the sense of normalcy that we had before the outbreak.
And yes, we know that no one is going to see us, and we're not doing it because we're insecure.
Most of us are choosing to wear makeup during this time because we like wearing it and enjoy learning how to try new types of techniques that we could never try out before the outbreak. Just like anyone else, we are trying to make sense of the chaotic world around us and are doing the one thing that helps us to feel less anxiety and more control.
