For those of you who have seen the "I Am Not A Label" video from musician Prince Ea, you will understand the purpose of my article. I am not writing this to join a bandwagon, I am writing this because it is time to grow up and accept the fact we are all the same. You may be Black, White, Irish, Muslim, Christian or even purple..but does that make you who you are? Does the color of your skin or the god in which you believe make you any greater than the man or woman beside you?
"Who would you be if the world never gave you a label? Would you check a box and choose?"
If you were to start all over again, would you choose to be Black, White or Hispanic? Would you choose to be European? Would you choose to be short or tall? Would you choose to be fat or skinny? Whatever you may choose, refuse. If the world were to see everyone for who they truly are, then the world we live in would be great. If we were to tear down the wall of labels we can all be unified as "one."
No matter who we are, the identifying factor among all of us is what is on the inside. It is the heart we have towards others that helps to unify the corrupt world we have created. Look at the news and look at yourself. What have you done to make the world better? What have you done to beat it down? Did you judge someone based on their beliefs or color?
John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
The world we have created is a corrupt one. No one feels comfortable with who they are because they are so busy finding ways to label others. It upsets me knowing that people act a certain way out of fear. It is time to, as Prince Ea said, to come out of our shell and become a butterfly. Break away from the society of labels because we are not just a color or a religion, we are different. Together those differences can create a greater place to live. I want to live in a society where people are not afraid of the labels we give them, break free from that and we essentially "Love one another."
I know this may sound over the top, but anyone living in this generation has a voice to speak up. I am tired of seeing individuals being bullied based on where they come from. Can we not act like adults and grow together?
