Ways To Stay Sane During Finals Week

It'll all be over soon

Ways To Stay Sane During Finals Week

Finals. I know no one is ready to hear that word. But, as we come closer to the end of the semester, it’s important to remember a few things that help us all stay sane during finals.

Space out your studying

By now, most of us are aware of our exam schedules. It’s proven that cramming, especially pulling an all nighter, is not the most beneficial way to study. If you plan your studying in intervals, you’ll be able to store information better.

Take breaks

Take a 10 or 15 minute break during studying. Play some music, watch some Netflix (don’t go on a Netflix binge though). Or even just relax for the time being to let your mind process what you are studying.

Make sure you get enough sleep

This is one of the most important rules of all. Get enough sleep. When you sleep, your brain processes what you studied by moving it into your long term memory so it can be retrieved at a later time. In order for this to work, you’ll need the normal amount of time for sleep, which means two hours won’t cut it.

Eat healthy

It can become very easy to order late night food or snack on junk food when trying to study. Our bodies need real fuel, especially our brains that help process all of our studying. Unfortunately all those late night cookies and wings won’t fuel our brain the same. But after finals, by all means order all the good stuff that you can.

Form a study group

There will always come a time when someone else understands something more than you. There will also come times when you understand certain things more than someone else. In this case, creating study groups can become a great tool for studying for classes.

Drink lots of water

Although some people do this already, some of us don’t (I’m guilty of this). Not only does water keep you full, it helps our brains process information easier.

Create a to-do list

Instead of trying to look through multiple papers or power points from different subjects, make yourself a to-do list or schedule of what has to get done. Not only will it keep you more organized, but for myself it motivates me to get things done in a timely manner.

Don't stress (too much)

Obviously some amount of stress is inevitable during finals. But too much stress can take a toll on yourself. If you stress yourself out, you’ll be unable to focus on the important topics of your classes, which can lessen your study time.

Email your teachers

If you have questions, don’t be afraid to email your teachers. Most teachers are more than willing to help even though it’s finals week. Even though classes are over, they understand students will still have questions during their studying.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
