If you're from Texas, then you know what a homecoming mum is. If you're not from Texas, and have no clue what this "mum" object is that I speak of, prepare to have your mind blown.
Each homecoming season in the Lone Star State, sweet, little high schoolers (more than likely their parents...) buy their homecoming dates a frilly, feathery, (usually) giant mum that their date normally wears to school all day, in addition to the homecoming game that night. Every year, these things get bigger and bigger. More feathers. More teddy bears. More cowbells. The mum craze has gotten out of hand people. Hundreds of dollars are wasted on these stupid mums, and for what? To hang on your high school hero wall after you graduate?
I say it's time to put to death this bizarre tradition, and use that money to donate to college students instead. To give you some perspective, here are nine ways that college students could use highschoolers' homecoming mum money.1. 37.5 pints of Fuego queso
2. 600 green scantrons
3. 42 half-gallons of Blue Bell
4. Over three years worth of Netflix
5. 714 packages of Ramen
6. 63 student discount movie tickets from Cinemark
7. 125 honey butter chicken biscuits
8. Three pairs of Chacos
9. 400 Gumby's pizza rolls on Tuesdays
Your eyes have been opened, have they not? Some of you out-of-staters may still be confused at the whole mum phenomenon. Probably just don't try to understand why they play such an enormous role in our homecoming season. We're still trying to figure it out. But please give us (Texans) grace. Once these highschoolers get to college, they'll realize what they've done.
37.5 pints of Fuego queso or homecoming mum that will hang on your wall forever or end up in the trash? We all know which one wins. Queso. The answer is always queso.
