It's New York, but the streets are glistening and neon lights are zooming by. A motorcycle's engine drills through the air. A synth-voice narrates the scene. Words appear in front of you, "Watcher or Player?"
That's the trailer for what I think is the coolest movie of the summer, "Nerve." At first glance, this movie seems like it will be another sexed up, drugged up teenage movie, but it's not. The film's message about the power of the Internet and its "watchers" is not only relevant, but also powerful.
There's a lot to love about this movie. It's based on a book and the script was written by the author, Jeanne Ryan, and by screenwriter, Jessica Sharzer. Right out of the gate, I'm loving the girl power in the script.
As I watched the movie, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the absence of sex scenes. They're rampant in movies these days, but thankfully, the creators of "Nerve" knew the movie's run time could be spent on better things. The film's directors, Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost, said they aimed for a PG-13 rating and they didn't want to include the dark reality of any sex-related dares. I follow Hollywood closely, and I can't tell you how truly refreshing their stance is.
So, what do we get instead?
We get tactful characterization. Instead of having the main characters' stories thrown at you in the very beginning, the characters are developed and their secrets revealed over the course of the film.
I also thought the characters were relatable, whether you're a teen or not. The issues the characters face are things we have all experienced. For instance, as a college student facing out-of-state graduate schools, it was nice to see the reality of that struggle in the movie.
Last but not least, aside from the way everything looks in this film, the soundtrack is my absolute favorite part. The soundtrack is available on iTunes, but you can listen to the songs from the film here, on Spotify. This is my new summer soundtrack!
Don't let "Nerve" pass you by. It's a must see while it's in theaters with all those surround speakers! It surpassed my expectations and then some. This movie gives us what Hollywood so often misses: a powerful message and characters you can honestly root for. So, jump right in and play. Be a watcher and see this film!
