If there's one thing I learned in my 19 years of existence, is that there's so much to learn in the world. And you can learn all of it, and there's still an abundance of things to learn. I always forget the hidden love I hold for documentaries until I get through them. And then I find myself on a binge of documentaries and suddenly can't get enough!
So here, I've composed a list of eight of (some) of the best documentaries I have watched through my years. Yes, of course, there is an abundance of possible documentaries in the world, but this is what I've compiled.
With summer rolling in fast, these can keep you busy for at least a couple days. I'll admit I'm a little guilty of falling into the pattern of sleeping, eating, and going to work after about two days of summer break, and if you ask me, that's not very stimulating.
Here are eight documentaries to watch (all available on Netflix) to really get you thinking:
1. "What the Health."
What the Health is a health documentary that came out in early 2017 that really was one that shocked the world when it came out. The film follows Kip Andersen, director, writer, and producer as he interviews many different physicians and others alike regarding diet and health. Through interviews, the film shows the underlying connections between meat, dairy, and other health organization industries. Ultimately, "What the Health" shows the consequences of meat and dairy products and all the things that we don't always see.
2. "Minimalism": A documentary about important things.
This is one of my favorite documentaries on the list is given, as said in one of my other articles, I've always strived to live a more minimalistic lifestyle. "Minimalism" shows the raw truth of how much we as humans rely on materialistic things and always want just stuff. The documentary came out in May 2016 and follows the lives of different minimalists around the world, all showcasing how they're striving to live a life of less. Definitely, a must see!
3. "Cowspiracy": The sustainability secret.
"Cowspiracy," also written and produced by Kip Andersen, showcases probably one of the rawest and uncut descriptions of animal agriculture. "Cowspiracy" came out in June 2014 and has been one of the most talked about documentaries to my knowledge. This film looks at the many different avenues of animal agriculture and the effects it has on our environment, as well as looking at many of the concerns our Earth leads today.
4. "The Secret."
"The Secret" has to be one of the best documentaries out there and it's one that I always forget exists until I see it. This film, which came out in early 2006, shows and demonstrates exactly what the Law of Attraction is. Producers Rhonda Byrne and Paul Harrington showcase interviews of philosophers, professors, entrepreneurs, and many others. As you know, I'm very much an activist for the Law of Attraction so this documentary stands high on the list for me.
5. "Take Your Pills."
I came across this documentary one afternoon a few months ago, and as soon as I started it I was glued to the screen. Take Your Pills is a very interesting documentary because as much as you think it'll bash on drugs and how bad they are for you, it doesn't really do that. Take Your Pills shows the audience the misleading tactics there are with drugs that enhance your abilities, specifically focusing on Adderall.
6. "Cosmos": A spacetime odyssey.
These last three documentary suggestions I have are all documentary series. "Cosmos" has one season on Netflix than holds 13 episodes (and 13 packed episodes that is). "Cosmos" was premiered as an American science documentary in 2014 and pretty much is that. What's really fascinating about this series is that it's a follow up to the 1980 series of "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage." Fortunately, you might have to be a bit into space and science to really be drawn into this series, but as someone who usually isn't into that, I find this documentary super fascinating and interesting. Who doesn't want to learn more about Earth and what's around you?
7. "The Blue Planet."
"The Blue Planet" is exactly how it sounds: a documentary exploring the depths of our world's oceans and all of its galore. What I love about this documentary series is that it's a British nature documentary that originally premiered on BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). What's super interesting about "The Blue Planet" is that each episode, nearly 50-minutes long, focuses on different parts of the ocean that makes it that much interesting than the last. If you're looking to learn more about the ocean and all its depth, then this is the documentary for you! Also, "The Blue Planet II" is out, however, not available on Netflix... YET.
8. "Planet Earth II."
Planet Earth II is, again, another British nature documentary. However, this film focuses primarily on different land animals. Now you see the two in the title so obviously, there's a first edition. The first "Planet Earth" came out in 2006 and since then, the second series has been made. The episodes of "Planet Earth II" following a similar track as the first one did, but focuses more on certain types of areas. If you're a lover of animals, this one's for you.
With all of that, I feel like I've given you a bit of a jump start on documentaries to watch on any rainy (or sunny) day.
It's clear that there's so much to learn in the world and here I just gave you a small, small glimpse of everything that's available. And if for some reason not one of these fancies your boat, Netflix has a plethora of documentaries that'll hopefully spark some interest for you.
