On September 22nd, 2016, Idina Menzel hosted a launch party for her new self-titled album "idina." at the Brooklyn Bowl. The fans who were lucky enough to score tickets got to witness what may have been her best performances to date.
The song I'm pretty sure everyone raved about - myself included - was her performance of her new single "Queen of Swords". Every song Idina Menzel has ever sang has been ridiculously vocally demanding and this is no different. Not only does the chorus contain some pretty high belting, but at the end of the song, Idina SOARS up to a high B flat on a mix belt, which, until she did it, I assumed was just not possible. Of course, hitting that note live on a belt seemed a bit ambitious, but Idina proved to be the queen of high belting. Move over Mariah and Beyoncé. Idina Menzel is not playing around anymore.
I've been a fan of Idina since 2003, when I saw her in Wicked. My parents have been fans since RENT, in which Idina made her Broadway debut in 1996. It was not surprising to any of us that Idina was still slaying the heck out of these high notes, even after 20 years. Her voice has been critiqued and torn apart relentlessly, especially after the Frozen craze, as if she wasn't simultaneously going through a divorce and doing 8 shows a week in If/Then (I am still bitter about that show getting such bad reviews. It changed my life), all of which I'm sure took a toll on her voice. Not to mention Let it Go is ridiculously demanding vocally. But I digress.
My point is, Idina Menzel is the most underrated singer. She's been in this industry for 20+ years. She deserves so much more than what she has gotten, and "Queen of Swords" proves this.
Idina Menzel is the queen of everything, and I have a feeling we're only just seeing the beginning of the blazing supernova that she is.
