I don't know about anyone else, but I really hate politics. I don't understand them and the most involved I get is by sharing a funny joke about a candidate on Facebook. If you're anything like me, you're probably surrounded by people who care a lot about politics and are getting really into the debates. This is how I've managed to get through debate season:
1. Make sure you have something to do
You might fall asleep because they are so boring to watch. To avoid this (and simultaneously make yourself seem more studious), grab your laptop and say "I have a super important essay to write/ test to study for, but I really want to watch the debate" then position yourself so nobody else can see your screen and watch cat videos (make sure your sound is off).
2. Use your verbal cues
Is somebody laughing? Laugh. Is somebody outraged? Wave your fist in fury and groan. It doesn't matter that you have no idea what's going on, just follow your fellow audience's sounds and you'll blend in just fine.
3. Make fun of Donald Trump's hair
It doesn't matter if you or the people you're with are fans of Trump. It doesn't even matter if it's a democratic debate and he isn't there. Always make fun of his hair.
4. Bring up the only thing you know
If you know a couple of political topics, pick the one you know best and bring it up. Say something like "I really hope they discuss their views on [topic]." Wait for someone to acknowledge you before continuing with your stance because there's no point in talking to yourself about politics. You aren't fooling yourself, you're fooling everyone else. If you know absolutely nothing about politics, pause your cat video and look something up real quick- just enough to have a stand on it so you can sound a little intelligent.
5. Say who you think should win
If people question you and call you crazy, just say, "I always root for the underdog." If they agree with you, then you should just stop reading this because you know more about politics than I do, why are you even reading this?
6. Give up
It's not even worth it. Just turn off the TV or go home, whatever your situation is, curl up in bed and watch One Tree Hill re-runs like we should be doing.
