Winter break is coming to a close and if you've run out of things to do, odds are you've turned to Netflix to pass the time before you are reunited with your friends. I've been known to just re-watch an old episode of a favorite series because I didn't quite feel like sifting through the plethora of bizarre movies and TV shows to find the hidden gems. But the hidden gems, once found, can change the Netflix game. I spend an embarrassing amount of time on Netflix so I'm going to share some of the gems I've found over the years. This week: Sherlock.
Sherlock is a BBC show that follows Consulting Detective Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson in modern-day London as they investigate and solve crimes. There have been three seasons since its premier in 2010. Each season comprises three episodes. This sounds disappointing but each episode is also ninety minutes long so they are practically movies.
The show has an incredible cast of characters. Sherlock solves crimes at an alarming speed and he always manages to punctuate his deductions with crass remarks. Watson helps as best he can and blogs about the mysteries. Even the villains are somewhat likable, if only because they make the show so interesting.
To all of you out there who proudly abhor Benedict Cumberbatch and his alien-like face: I was once one of you. It is a sickness. The only known cure is watching Sherlock. You'll binge-watch every episode and fall in love with Benedict Cumberbatch's oddly beautiful face in no time. Sherlock is one of the most intelligent shows you will ever watch and it will certainly become the show you fall back on when you don't feel like searching for a new show to watch on Netflix. Bonus: after watching Sherlock, you'll understand about 80% more of what goes on on Tumblr.
The show has won many awards and continues on with no end in sight despite the very busy schedules of the actors it has brought into popularity. A Special was just released on New Years Day and season four has yet to be filmed. It will be a long wait but I have no doubt that season four will be well worth it.
