While living a life without technology is inevitable, we also have to remember to not let it consume us. Nowadays, it's rare to see anyone walk around without their cell phone in their hand. Having a way of communication and internet access at our fingertips does come in handy, but it can also make us miss out on the beautiful things in life. Instead of being so wrapped up on whats behind the little screen, we need to be wrapped up in each other.
I always have my phone in reach. But I've come to understand that while I'm obsessing on Kylie Jenner's Snapchat story, how many likes my Instagram picture will get, or waiting for a text, I'm missing out on the things that are going around me. Yeah, it's okay to mess around on your phone when you're just hanging out at home. But we need to get back into the habit of putting it away when we are out with friends. Instead of madly texting someone that's not with you, enjoy that people that are there in front of you.
This past weekend really made me realize how much time we are wasting on our phones. I know we all want to get the perfect picture when we are out with friends, but snap a picture or two and then enjoy each other. There are countless times when there are groups of people just standing around for an hour taking pictures alone. Pictures are an important part of making memories but if all we are doing is Snapchatting and Instagraming it the whole time, are we really enjoying ourselves?
Our generation has had the best of both worlds, one where cell phones were barely used and one where it can be the most useful tool right at our hands. We just need to be able to find the happy medium between the two. Set your phone down a few hours a day when you're at home and don't bother mindlessly getting on social media. When you go out to dinner, put it in the middle of the table with everyone else's and no one can touch them, or keep it in your car. Enjoy one another and enjoy the life we were given. It's much healthier than staring at a phone screen for hours on end. Don't worry, a missed text or call isn't the end of the world and those likes on Facebook will be there when you get back. Don't be afraid to lose yourself in life instead of in your phone!
