As a college student a great get to know to know you question is “What’s your major?” while many don’t mind this question, I really hate it. It makes me proceed to say Elementary Education and then instantly get judged.
For some reason teachers have this negative connotation of not being the brightest. You know the saying “those who can, do; those who can’t, teach.” Right? Wrong! I did not choose to go into education because I wasn’t “smart” enough for anything else. I chose it because I love every aspect of it, even the less glorious parts. It’s a job where “sick days” turn into more work because of sub plans. It’s a job that is responsible for the success of the future work force. It’s a job that isn’t always valued by society and is deemed unimpressive by most. It’s a job that will not make you rich or famous. But most importantly it’s a job that is needed.
Luckily for society there are a lot of great people who are willing to fill that need. I chose education because I want to make a difference in society. I think we all want to make a difference, but I cannot think of a better way to make my impact in this world than to help shape the future generations. I want to be an inspiration to people. I want children to look up to me and then strive to be a better person themselves. I want to work with the most shapeable people on earth, children. I simply just love working with children, no matter what they are going through in life they have the most positive outlook, and such an innocent nature.
To me it doesn’t matter that I wont be rich or that some people may think less on me because I am only a teacher. For me its all about the students and about the amount of lives I’m affecting.
There was never a moment when I felt that my calling was somewhere else. I cannot wait for the day that I have a classroom of my own!
