Warning: the following article may consist of spoilers, crying and possibly an intense emotional breakdown about AMC’s The Walking Dead. Here we go (grab the tissues and rally your retorts because I am ready to rant).
Before we start the controversy on the season’s premiere, I think we can all agree that it has been a traumatic six seasons for all Walking Dead fans. From losing the farm in season two, getting completely separated in season five, then there was the Governor (twice) and now the show’s seventh season has just topped every tragedy we’ve dealt with. Personally, I have never been so upset about an episode since Hershel’s tear-jerking execution (by none other than the Governor…and with Michonne’s sword, no less!). Although I am not a hardcore “read all the comics a hundred times” number-one fan, I have fallen in love with the show’s gut-wrenching cliffhangers, excellent dramatic performances (can we get an Emmy for Andrew Lincoln please?), and the walkers, of course (don’t you dare call them zombies). And like every die-hard, I shall have my ranting moment.
The elephant in the room must be addressed: why, oh why, did it have to be Glenn? Yes, I understand that the comics “declare that Glenn must die at the barb-wired end of Lucille,” but good God, the premiere? As for Abraham, no hate, but I was much more pleased with you dying then Glenn (who was literally like the second most important character introduced in the whole show). I respect the comic-lovers and their wish for “accuracy,” so I understand why the producers chose to off both Glenn AND Abraham. Because let’s face it, Abraham was just a decoy to cover up the heartbreaking death of our favorite character (other than Maggie, of course). The show was lacking a little excitement during the last season (probably building up to Negan), and rumors were spreading that the show was losing a lot of its audience. But after this incident, I’m sure they gained a lot of attention…good and bad. The bottom line: We are all heartbroken.
Oh, Daryl. Sweetie. We love you, but have fun dealing with the guilt of killing the most beloved pizza delivery boy ever. Sincerely, I am disappointed in you (but still love ya!).
That all being said, how is the group going to cope with the loss of two vital characters? How will Glenn’s death affect Maggie’s role in the group (I can see her stepping up as a leader)? Is Rick actually okay? Also, can we acknowledge the fact that Rick was willing to chop off his son’s arm…and Carl was like “yeah, do it”. Obviously, they all would’ve died if he hadn’t been willing to do the deed, but it was pretty intense to witness Carl’s “calm and collected” behavior about losing a freaking arm. And finally, what will the group do next; they want to rescue Daryl, Maggie’s having serious pregnancy issues, two important people are dead and the whole group is emotionally and physically unstable. And then there is Negan.
Ah Negan, America’s newly most hated person. Ever. But we got to admit, Jeffery Dean Morgan plays the role perfectly. It is going to be interesting to see where Morgan takes this character and how faithful he will be to the comics. Obviously, he has already shown us that he is no man to mess with, but how long will that last?
Until Sunday, my fellow walker stalkers.
