I got my first real job when I was 16-years-old as a host at Texas Roadhouse. The busy weekends took some getting used to, but it shortly became a normal part of my weekly routine. My co-workers became my second family and some of my best friends. When moving away for college, I tried to broaden my horizons. I did retail for about a year and worked at a desk for an on campus job. After two years, Fort Smith gained a restaurant near and dear to my heart, Texas Roadhouse. I got a job shortly after its opening and have been there ever since. I believe waitressing/bartending is my calling until I graduate college. I do not plan on leaving until I have a degree in my hand. And even then, it will be hard to leave a place that has been like a second home for so long.
Something some people do not realize is that we do our best to make your experience fun and relaxed or, if you are familiar with Texas Roadhouse lingo, legendary! So if your food does not turn out the way you like it, tell your server. I swear, they will get it fixed and nothing else will happen to your food. I understand why someone would be paranoid about this, but this is a large and respectable company. You could be the biggest jerk to ever walk through that door and your food will still not be messed with.
Something every server will agree with me on is that everyone should work in a restaurant at least once in their life. I think dealing with rude people and not being able to say anything rude back has really prepared me for the real world and my future career.
Nothing brightens your work day like seeing your regulars. Every day I wait for Hugh, a bar regular, to walk through the door. It's good to know that we have given him a good enough experience a number of times to keep him coming back almost every day. He sits in his usual bar stool, talks to passing servers, asks about your life and tells you about his. He, as well as many others, will sit there all night and become some of the best parts of your job.
For those of you looking for a fun job to get you through college, I strongly recommend working at a restaurant! You may not have every weekend free, but it is worth it in the long run!
