Waiting On The World To Change

“Now we see everything that’s going wrong with the world and those who lead it. We just feel like we don’t have the means to rise above and beat it.”

John Mayer sang it best, but how long do we have to keep waiting for the world to change? Terror has struck nation after nation in the past weeks as ISIS claims responsibility for attacks on Paris and other European countries as well as rumored bomb threats on United States soil. Not only are global crises rocking our world, internal issues are continuing to arise within our own country, as well.

It is a scary time to be alive as countries battle one another for the sake of their people, bombs are dropped on civilians in far off nations and talk of a possible World War III is whispered around the globe. We are held hostage by the fear that has consumed our every thought as things continue to get worse and more people continue to be killed.

How many beheadings of Americans must be displayed on the news? How many more soldiers must sacrifice their lives to fight for our country? How many more civilians must be slain in order to stop these brutal murders? How much more can our world take?

It is frightening to continue with everyday life as the future of what lies ahead is scarier than it was the day before. It may sound like the typical beauty pageant response, but in all seriousness, how long must we wait until we realize that we need “world peace”?

I have never identified myself as a peace lovin’, tree huggin’, zenned out hippie, but our world needs some sort of peace to counteract the monstrosities that have occurred in recent events. It is exhausting as much as it is heart-breaking to see headline after headline list the death toll of ongoing terrorist attacks, the threats of suicide bombers walking our streets and the faces of those that we have lost.

It is a scary time to be alive, so as terror strikes and fear is instilled into our hearts, we must band together and protect those we love, stand for what we think is right and make peace with those around us.

Maybe with baby steps we can solve one issue at a time. We cannot wait forever, but like Gandhi once said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

So as the days pass by and more awful events shock our world, do the things that make you happy and make peace with what you can. This might not change the problems crushing the globe, but it can make your world a little more bearable.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
