Can't Wait To Be Carrie: My Summer In New York City

The first thing you should know about me is that I've been a writer for as long as I can remember. I love having a good pen in my hand, or more realistically, a keyboard beneath my fingers. There's something so satisfying about being able to share your own words. I'm happiest when I finish off an article or when someone lets me know they really enjoyed reading my latest.

Something else you should know about me, is that I am actually obsessed with Carrie Bradshaw from "Sex and the City." OK, yes, it is a little bit of a cliche, but, she is actual goals. She writes the most amazing column, has the greatest group of girlfriends, a fabulous closet, a perfectly un-perfect relationship with Mr. Big, and oh yeah, a beautiful rent-controlled apartment in New York City. Of course I want to be her, who wouldn't?

So in my journey to emulate Carrie Bradshaw's life in every way possible and make my own life goals, I took my first step in applying for my first New York City job. (OK, well, internship.) Fast forward through the interview process and I'm happy to say that I will be interning for Odyssey this upcoming summer. Actually, more than happy—I'm pretty ecstatic. It doesn't feel real yet that I will be following in Carrie's Monolo Blahnik footsteps and writing my way through the city.

But I have to say, landing my dream internship isn't a complete celebration... A lot of people have scoffed at me when I let it slip that I'm a writer. They don't have to say it; I know what they're thinking when I see that look, the writing-is-not-actually-a-career look. A pretty similar look that Carrie's ~totally~ rude Vogue editor gave her when she submitted her piece about how boyfriends are exactly like accessories. So. Rude.

But if Carrie Bradshaw has taught me anything, it's definitely to keep pursuing my dreams and remain true to myself. While I do envy Carrie for her crazy cool, fashionable life, I think the real reason I've always wanted to be Carrie is because she makes her decisions based on what will make her happy. Through bad boyfriends, good friendships, and a million columns, Carrie does what she wants. She writes what she wants, she buys the shoes, and she drinks her Cosmopolitans with cheer. That's what makes her goals.

So taking a note out of Ms. Bradshaw's book, here is to following my dreams in the Big Apple—writing, shoes, Cosmos and all.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
