Waging War For Better Mental Health

Why is mental health such a difficult issue to talk about? Let's change that.

In recent weeks, America has encountered many tragic school shootings. Since September, there have been five school shootings on record. And because of these horrific incidents, we want to blame the guns and we want to blame the gun manufacturers for the crimes committed and hold them responsible. While there may indeed be flaws in the laws of gun control, I believe we are missing the point of where our focus needs to be in order to put a stop to most gun violence: mental health. Why is mental health such a difficult subject to talk about? Why do we continue to push it under the rug and act as if it is not a problem? We want to blame guns when we should really be blaming ourselves. It is not the gun that has committed the crime, the gun cannot pull its own trigger, the brain behind the machine is what commits the action. This is where we must put our main focus. Many are embarrassed to claim that they or someone they love suffers from mental health issues because they want to hide it, act as if they are “normal.” However, there is nothing that claims just because your brain functions differently than someone else’s means you are no longer considered “normal.” This is not a topic to be embarrassed about, it is a topic to be aware of and help those who might need assistance in such an area. Mental health issues are a growing epidemic in our nation because we refuse to admit we have a problem with it. Now is the time to stand up and become aware of the growing problem our country faces with mental health. It is time to become aware of the signs, admit that there is an issue and seek help to stop the growth of such a fixable problem. This is a call to action to not focus all our time and efforts on strict gun control, but to focus on people, focus on the mind behind the action. I am not particularly concerned about the actions of the firearm because without the mind behind it, no action can be taken. This is a call to talk to your legislators, raise awareness and wage war against the growing problem our nation faces with mental health.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
