Volleyball players are unmistakably not given enough credit when it comes to the effort they put onto the court. Volleyball has become somewhat of a joke toward many athletes unless discussing it at an Olympic level. Basically, volleyball is not given the hype and respect it truly deserves.
There are many components of volleyball that can be looked at, but the main four are serving, bumping/ digging, setting, and hitting. These options need to be evaluated by players appropriately in order to win any game.
1. Serving
Each volley begins with a serve, and that serve needs to be thoroughly planned. The server needs to look at the other team, and in a matter of seconds, determine the best position to aim that ball. The server needs to throw the ball in the air just right for them to give it their best power or spin. Swing too soon or too late with the ball not going over the net, and that's something you'll regret for the rest of the game.
2. Bumping / Digging
When the other team smacks a hit in your direction, it's either your time to shine or your time to fall trying. Digging is an incredibly hard skill to master. First of all, someone is deliberately slamming a ball at you, and you have two seconds to move and try to keep it in the air. Bumping is so important when it comes to getting the ball ready for a setter to work their magic. Volleyball players don't get enough credit for fearlessly facing these balls.
3. Setting
Setting is a beautiful skill that is a necessity for any attack from a hitter. A setter works hard for their beautiful hands making beautiful contact with a beautiful ball. A setter has to sprint to any miscalculated digs and bumps and still tries to give a hitter a chance at slamming it. A setter is always underrated, but very much a necessity to win any volleyball game.
4. Hitting
Hitting is the best chance a team has at scoring points. If the hitters can manage to control their hits and make sure they stay inside of the court, or even better on the lines, then the team is sure to be successful. People think that the hitters are only in the front; however, the best teams have hitters all over their court. Hitting is a skill that is amazing to watch when completed successfully.
Volleyball is a hard game that involves a lot of planning and skill. It's fast-paced and hard to slow down. However, it is amazing to watch and it should be respected more. Volleyball athletes are just as tough and capable as other athletes. So show your volleyball guys and gals a little more respect and support!
