Rose Torche and Morris May are filmmakers who are breaking boundaries. They are going to be at Sundance this year and the film that they have created, The Party, will be having a special screening. This film is supposed to be part one of a three part series. Their movie aims to bring to light a prevalent topic on college campuses: rape. The film is shot from two different perspectives, the guy and the girl. Torche and May filmed this on a very tight budget in a single day on a college campus in a fraternity house. To view the movie you must use an Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. You read correctly: Virtual. Reality. The viewer would watch one perspective and then switch to the other perspective to get the full story.
May started the company, Specular Theory, which is a virtual reality production company. He also built the camera for this short film. May thinks that this will eventually catch on when the equipment and the technology become more accessible, but he also mentions that he doesn't think that this is going to be mainstream and it will be confined to high end film festivals, like Sundance.
I think this would be a cool way to watch a movie. This virtual reality can be used as a tool to bring forth change. There are a lot of social ills I think this can combat -- for example, racism. A lot of people might not understand that their words have power, but if you can make a film that puts them into a situation where they experience it, firsthand, you can help to give them a much needed perspective. Feminism, slut-shaming, and poverty can also be expounded upon by virtual reality.
I hope this type of viewing experience becomes more popular. I cannot wait to see the innovations this new technology will lead to!
