Being a vinyl junkie, I don't know how many times I get asked this question, "What are some albums I should own in my vinyl collection Xander?" Here's the thing, it's really all about your taste in music genres. Even if I recommend something to you, it may not something you will enjoy because we might have different tastes. But if you're dead serious about starting a vinyl collection, or even want to know what are some albums you own. Here are 15 albums that should be in anyone's collection. This list is not in any particular order so there is no "number one or number two." I have also decided to split this list into two, so check back next week for the other 10 albums.
1. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon
Let's get this one out of the way. It's a must to have in anyone's vinyl collection! Yes, Pink Floyd had great albums such as The Wall and Wish You Were Here. But nothing, and I mean NOTHING compares to Dark Side. It's trippy, poetic and there are stories that you can sync it with the classic film The Wizard of Oz. But it's also one of those albums you can't just pick a favorite track from. It's one that needs to be listened to when you're just wanting to chillax.
2. David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars
Considered to be Bowie's greatest record of all time. This album is packed with classics such as Suffragette City, Star Man, my personal favorite Five Years, and of course the title track. Bowie may have left us too soon, but this album is one that should be in your collection. This also a great starter record for those who want to know why Bowie was one of the greats.
3. Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain Soundtrack
Since we're on the subject of great musicians who left us too soon this year, might as well throw his purpleness in the mix as well. Prince has a cornucopia of great records throughout his career. But Purple Rain is the album that catapulted him to superstardom. This album also netted him an Oscar for best original song. But you can't complain about hits like Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, the controversial Darling Nikki and the title track Purple Rain.
4. The Clash - London Calling
Let's cut to the chase. The Clash is one of those bands that may have piqued your interest. . . Mainly because one of your friends was a big fan, and you thought that friend was the coolest of cool. But let's be real, The Clash is one of those bands that will just blow your mind! London Calling is considered their opus, not just because the band mixes elements of punk, rock, and reggae into their songs, but just because they're so damn catchy!
5. Ramones - Ramones
Speaking of punk rock, being we've added UK punk to the mix, might as well throw in some American! Yes, they played the same chords over and over, and their lyrics are often repetitive. But one thing you can't deny with The Ramones is, their songs always get stuck in your head. Their debut album does that successfully, I don't know how many time's I've been caught humming "Beat on the Brat" at the radio station to where someone will think I'm losing it.
6. Michael Jackson - Thriller
I'm not really going to explain this one. It's mandatory!
7. Arctic Monkeys - AM
Yes, this one is a little newer than the rest on this list, but damn it's great! Arctic Monkeys gave U.K. rock the boost it needed when times were low. Though some might consider this an acquired taste, it stands out as one of their best albums to date.
8. The Beatles - Revolver
Not going to lie, choosing just one record by "The Fab Four" is not an easy task. If I had my way, the majority of this list would've been albums by The Beatles. But Revolver is just . . . Well, I'll put it this way, it was a time when The Beatles were still looked at as a pop act but started to enter more into the later stuff like that of Abbey Road and The White Album. Revolver also showcased a side of The Beatles that many fans had not seen in earlier works. It showed that they could shed the pop and focus more on harder rock music. Yes, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band is a must in anyone's collection as is Abbey Road, but if you have to start out with just one, Revolver is your best bet!
9. Beck - Odelay
In 1994 Beck released Mellow Gold. It had one major hit single "Loser" which is still overplayed on corporate radio stations to this day, driving many rock purists nuts. Many thought he would end up another "one hit wonder." That is until 1996 when he released his follow-up Odelay and things changed drastically not only for Beck but for the spectrum of alternative rock.
10. Radiohead - OK Computer
I could write an entire essay about this album, and still, it would end up being a book. OK Computer is not only considered the best album of the 90s, but it helped shaped Radiohead into the band it is today. Yes, you could argue that The Bends or even Kid A did that, but nothing compares to OK Computer. Fort example Paranoid Android is an audio orgasm that starts out slow, gets fast, mellows out and then ends on a high note. . . Like great sex! Electioneering and No Surprises round out the album as does the infamous Karma Police with it's poetic lyrics.
