Video Game Review: Sonic The Hedgehog 2

So, Sonic The Hedgehog (1991) was a huge success, and when a game is good people want a sequel! A year after the first game was released, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 burst on to the scene (and released on November 24th, 1992...or also known as "Sonic 2uesday", haha). Unlike the first game, Sonic 2 was actually developed in America. It's very similar to the original, but builds on many of the concepts and ideas introduced in the first title while piling on nearly twice the number of levels. The most drastic change was the introduction of a sidekick, "Miles Prower" (as a pun for Miles Per Hour, haha)... But he's mainly known as Tails.

1) Story

Not content just exploring his home of South Island, Sonic's adventures took him all over the globe. It was eventually he found himself at West-side Island, said to be home to a lost civilization. This civilization were given seven Chaos Emeralds (instead of the original game's six) of great power as a gift from the Gods. Eventually, this power corrupted the civilization, and this angered the Gods greatly. As punishment, they sealed the emeralds away in an alternate dimension called "The Special Zone".

Intrigued, Sonic lands his biplane, the Tornado, on the island. It's here Sonic runs in to a shy, two-tailed fox named Miles - Sonic nicknames him "Tails" for obvious reasons. Tails, as it turns out, loves machinery, and he is fascinated by Sonic's plane. Before the two can get too acquainted, however, they hear an explosion in the distance. Dr. Robotnik has followed Sonic to this island, and is tearing it apart looking for the Chaos Emeralds. He hopes they will act as an energy source for his greatest, most deadly creation: a giant, weaponized space station called the "Death Egg." Together, Sonic and Tails agree that Robotnik has to be stopped at all costs.

2) Gameplay

Arguably the most dramatic improvement is the implementation of Sonic's new move, the Spin-Dash. By ducking and pressing the jump button, Sonic would rev up in ball form. After revving up enough, the player could stop pressing down to get a burst of speed while staying rolled into a ball. Beyond that, however, gameplay for Sonic 2 remains relatively the same; the goal is still to get to the end of a level as quickly as possible, while destroying as many enemies and collecting as many rings as possible. Rather than having three acts and a boss fight (as in Sonic 1), Sonic 2 features only two acts per level, with some exceptions (Metropolis Zone features three acts, while Sky Chase, Wing Fortress, and Death Egg all feature a single act each).

Emerald Hill Zone – And it’s Green Hill Zone again but just as great. It’s a nice bright place, heck, even brighter than Green Hill Zone. What else can I say, it’s the beginner’s level.

Chemical Plant Zone
– A seemingly less-menacing factory level, and when I mean less-menacing, I mean less-menacing then Scrap Brain Zone from Sonic 1, I love this level, it’s the true "GOTTA GO FAST" level with speed boosts and many other ways that will even let you nearly leave the screen, such good fun. Oh, it’s also literal cancer with pink corrosive looking liquid at the bottom of the level, especially in Act 2, and you can go in it, most particularly that part where you have to jump on blocks whilst the water rises, and yes, I was also the child who died at that part the first time I played it, I think a lot of children back then died at that part, in which case, pray for them.

Aquatic Ruin Zone
– Thank goodness this isn’t Labyrinth Zone, this is a great water level, so great that you don’t even have to touch the water. Like Marble Zone, the settings looks as if it was once inhabited but now forgotten, this one is a Greek-like place, with over-grown vegetation and old-time brickwork, along with collapsing floors to give you the feeling of an old-time place that’s unstable.

Casino Night Zone – This would be the definite improvement of Spring Yard Zone and the setting would be used for more Sonic games in the future. It’s also a more lively place full of energy, a perfect casino/pinball fusion level, with pinball parts where you can gamble to collect more rings, or lose them instantly, teaching kids the dangers of gambling. And who said video gaming was a bad thing?

Hill Top ZoneOne of the most forgettable and pretty dull levels I’ve ever come across in this game. While we have a nice cloudy, mountain-like background, nearly everything else is recycled from other levels.

Mystic Cave Zone – A rather dark and spooky underground area, lots of spikes, lots of deadly fireflies, lots of greenery. It also has “the pit”, if you drop into it, that’s it, you can’t get out, you’ll lose rings from the spiky floor and die. Again, pray for those annoyed souls.

Oil Ocean Zone– A blistering hot area with a factory in the background and the OMINOUS OIL. It’s everywhere, I’m surprised no fire caught it, it would destroy the world.

Metropolis ZoneANOTHER FACTORY LEVEL, yes, machinery and factories are bad and nature and animals and greenery are good, which defeats the purpose considering that you’re playing this electronic game on a electronic device connected by a television and it’s literally keeping you from going out and explore nature. Also, everything is a trap in Metropolis Zone, even the enemies, including Asterons (which are easy to avoid), the Shellcrackers (who can be difficult to hit since they have a big claw and they placed in areas where you can easily get hit), and Slicers...AND I HATE THEM!!! They're frigging everywhere and their placements are just plain cheap!!!

Sky Chase ZoneThis is near enough the relaxant after the madness that was Metropolis Zone. You’re on top of your plane, Tails is the pilot, you can jump on enemies and you can still get caught by the plane so you won’t drop to your death.

Wing Fortress Zone – On a big airship with music that symbolizes the feeling of ‘THIS MEANS WAR!’

Death Egg Zone
– Where you battle Mecha Sonic, which is easy and finally, Robotnik’s big robot which is incredibly hard and you have to time your jumps and avoid the spike hands and I somehow manage to hit them, but once I thought of a strategy, I managed to beat him.

3) Special Stages

Chaos Emeralds also returned from the original, offering up an additional seventh Emerald. The special stages were done on a endless half-pipe which Sonic ran forward on collecting rings and avoiding enemies. If he had enough rings when he hit the checkpoint then he would continue until eventually obtaining a Chaos Emerald. Out of all the Special Stages in the Sonic franchise, the ones in Sonic 2 are the ones I hate the most. The controls seem so slippery, and it's so hard to get the rings and avoid obstacles. It's a good thing that the updated version fixes the controls, so I can manage to get all the Emeralds. When you get all the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic would be able to transform into Super Sonic (by collecting fifty rings and jumping in any stage). In this form, Sonic runs faster, jumps higher, and pretty much invulnerable to enemy attacks. Also, he changes his color from blue to a bright yellow as his spikes go up.

4) 2-Player Versus Mode

Sonic 2 also included a two versus player mode where, playing as either Sonic or Tails, two players can have a split screen race on one of 3 different zones or a Special Stage. In the regular zone races, on either Emerald Hill Zone, Casino Night Zone or Mystic Cave Zone, players are ranked in 5 different areas with the highest score winning the round. On the Special Stage the winner is the one who collects the most rings. In the case of a tie in the regular zones a Special Stage is then ran to determine a winner. Two player mode also added a couple of new item boxes. One being a teleporter which switched the two players around, the other being a Dr. Robotnik item which damaged the player that found it.

5) Overall

Overall, Sonic 2 is a remarkable improvement over the first game, and still stands as one of my favorite games in the series so far and it’s an utterly flawless game…maybe apart from Tails joining you, though you can switch him out in the settings. It’s a classic and sold huge amounts of mega drives...or genesises, beating Nintendo again for the year.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
