Victoria's Secret: Objectifying Women?

As we all know, Victoria's Secret is one of the largest and most well-known lingerie companies on the planet. They have been designing a wide variety of clothing, lingerie, and accessories for over 39 years and have created products that appeal to both younger and older women.

Once a year, the company organizes a fashion show to exhibit the fashion soon to be released and some pieces that are works of art worth millions of dollars. Some of the world's best-known models walk in the show and popular singing acts perform on the catwalk. Kendall Jenner, Alessandra Ambrosio, Adriana Lima, Miranda Kerr and so many other models flood the stage with smiles, kisses, and wings.

But what does it say about a society that televises a lingerie fashion show but not any other? We can never click to Channel 7 to watch a Gucci catwalk or a Michael Kors runway but in December every year, you can count on there being a Victoria's Secret show on the TV.

Some say that it intensifies the objectification of women and say that sex sells. Others say that it's because there are more models in this show that people know and would enjoy watching. I think that it's because Victoria's Secret is a brand that is more attainable by the general public than other major catwalk events.

Not everyone can walk into Vera Wang and buy a top because they think it's cute but more people are able to go to Pink, a branch of Victoria's Secret that targets younger women, and purchase a pair of underwear. But we need to get back to the topic of what causes the most controversy and that is if it's okay that these women walk in just their underwear.

Women have always been told to be modest and to keep their femininity refined. But what is so wrong about showing confident women who are proud of the work they put into their bodies on the TV? These women train up to 8 hours a week at the gym to tone their bodies along with following a strict diet regiment to maintain a certain figure.

A lot of people say that them being so skinny is unhealthy but in reality, all they focus on is their health. What they do embodies self-control and proving that if you want something bad enough, you have to work hard towards it. Not one of those models on the runway is naturally slim and can eat whatever they want. Were they born with a more slender figure and generally have a faster metabolism? Yes, but they don't let that be enough.

For the people that are super concerned about the fact that these models are wearing lingerie, the pieces are works of art. The bras and panties alone take hours upon hours to hand stitch together and apply the gemstones and other rhinestones. They are handcrafted and made so that they are tasteful and look beautiful from all angles.

One of the popular accessories these women wear are Angel Wings considering these models are called Angels. These wings take up to a year to make; each feather is individually placed to perfection, each rhinestone is intricately arranged and each structural piece is designed to remain sturdy. For all the effort put into each aspect of this show, it's no wonder why it is televised for everyone to see.

For now on, before you judge what some models are wearing, know that it's all for the art. Some of these pieces are meant to be shown off as an advertisement for stores while others are just meant to be enjoyed.

Little girls should look up to these models because they are strong, confident women. They aren't afraid to be sexy or to show what they work hard for, and they do it all in modesty.

Tune in December 5th at 10/9C on CBS to appreciate the production and the artistry put into the show.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
