What Everyone Is Missing from the Starbucks Cup Debate

The holiday season is upon us. Like every year, a myriad of retailers, shops, and eateries signify this time by adding winter themed products and goods to their establishments. This week Starbucks faced major controversy with their holiday cup design. Since 1997, it has been a tradition for Starbucks to have winter- themed cups which have included snowflakes, snowmen, and ornaments. This year, Starbucks decided that the simple red ombre design would be the most appropriate for the holiday season.

Starbucks vice president of Design & Content, Jeffrey Fields said "In the past, we have told stories with our holiday cups designs. This year we wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories." Christians are in an uproar due to the plain design. This all started with former Pastor Joshua Feuerstein who posted a video claiming that Starbucks removed "Christmas from their cups because they hate Jesus." Many Christians supported Feuerstein's video and took to social media to express their utter disappointment with the coffee company. However, Starbucks has never produced cups with Christian symbols and to think that this is some type of persecution is frankly absurd.

Others are expressing their views by hash tagging "It's just a cup" to show their opposition of this supposed war on Christmas. What ceases to amaze me is that people are forgetting what the holiday season is all about. It is about being thankful for what you have, reflecting on the good in life, giving to the less fortunate, and spreading goodwill and cheer. Do you think that a homeless family is worried about the design of a coffee cup? Or how about that disabled veteran who struggles to find his next meal? Even better, what about the thousands of children each winter that go without winter coats? Reality check: these things matter, a coffee cup doesn't. Shouting about a Starbucks cup is not helping anyone or anything.Instead of taking part of this nonsense, why not recognize things that actually matter? I promise, giving back is much more rewarding than taking a stance on a cup. In place of making ignorance go viral, here are 10 organizations to give back to and get involved with this holiday season.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
