Why Values Based Recruitment Is The Best Thing For Sorority Life

If you have never gone through sorority recruitment – this is usually what the first day is like. There’s excitement in the air while everyone anxiously waits for their party lists. Girls hear every bit of gossip about all the chapters. They most likely hear phrases like, “biggest house on the row,” “winners of all the competitions,” or “top tier.” Most girls are already favoring a chapter based on the superficial descriptions of each chapter. But these young women usually will never hear phrases mentioning a chapter’s values, sisterhood, or the genuine characteristics the women of a sorority possess.

And I believe that values based recruitment is the best way to change the recruitment process for the better.

Values based recruitment is a new style of recruitment that went into effect recently. The goal of this style of recruitment is to show the young women going through recruitment the real reasons sorority women chose their chapter and why they thrive in their chapter. These reasons are meaningful and highlight the true values a young woman should search for when choosing a sorority to affiliate herself with. On my campus our values include sincerity, community, individuality, involvement, diversity, academics, faith, and service. As you can see, none of these values include tier system ranking of a chapter or what chapter sounds most impressive to others on campus. For years and years many young women have based their chapter selection on these superficial values.

But with values based recruitment all of this will change.

There will be no more women running home on bid day and then never truly finding their place in their chapter because they realized they picked their sorority for all the wrong reasons. There will be no more women feeling the need to change their personality or appearance just so their favorite chapter will approve of them. There will be no more women who end up dropping their sorority a year later because they never truly felt at home or felt welcomed by their own sisters.

In the past, sororities could easily fake their way through recruitment. They could tell a young woman anything she wanted to hear and make the chapter sound attractive to her. But with values based recruitment, the sorority woman and young woman are both forced to be their genuine selves and talk about the values that they each cherish most. Young women will be able to know if a chapter is a fit for her right off the bat.

For the first time ever, girls will be choosing a chapter based off of what values mean the most to them. With values based recruitment, young women will be able to see themselves in a chapter based off of the right reasons. As cliché as it sounds, girls will start to follow their hearts when choosing a chapter rather than choosing a chapter based on the opinions and judgements of the other girls around them.

For the first time ever, we will be able to see every member of a chapter thrive and flourish in her own way because she will choose her home based off of what matters most.

This recruitment is real. This recruitment is genuine. And this recruitment is everything sorority life needed in every way possible.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
