I used to hate running. I've always been an athlete and I've played soccer and run track all my life, but I never really enjoyed running just to run. I wanted to though, desperately. I knew running was good for me and all, but when it wasn't for a sport, I just couldn't find pleasure in something so painful. Thankfully, that is no longer the case and I am now (at least sometimes) happy to call myself a runner. And if you're like me, you'll relate to many of the reasons that I run and to all of the things it has taught me.
1. It's the best cardio workout.
I know this is a very obvious reason, but it is one of the main reasons I have grown to love running. It gets your heart going and is such a good workout.
2. It has shown me that I am capable of more than I think.
This may seem dramatic, but through my years of track and running, I've realized that I am able to push myself so much harder than I think I can. I can push beyond imaginary boundaries and it has helped me to realize that running might not be the only area of my life that I underestimate myself in.
3. It develops mental toughness.
Nothing strengthens your willpower more than pushing through that last mile when your calves are burning, your chest is heaving, and you side is aching.
4. Running makes me feel good.
While some runs feel absolutely terrible, I never regret a run. I always finish feeling motivated and proud. It makes me feel like I've exerted myself fully each day.
5. You can eat more.
That is all.
6. Running is a beautiful example of progress.
Whether it's tracking with an app, a time, a distance, or simply by how you feel, running is a great representation of progress and it is so satisfying to break your own records and limits.
7. Running shows you the world differently.
Not only do you get the pleasure of running in various locations, paths, trails and maybe even states or countries (for those of you who run on vacation), but running also allows you to experience nature and people differently. The small exchanges with people on your routes and the new sites make each run exciting and worth it.
There are many great aspects of running and it has taught me so much. I run to say that I do, to join the club, to break my own boundaries, and to feel good about myself and what I'm capable of. You might not think you're a runner, but with a good pair of shoes and a great playlist (two more great reasons to run), you can be.
