Last month, Canadian rapper Drake released his latest studio album "Scorpion". Now there is no surprise that the album has already broken some records. Not only just by him being one of the most anticipated rappers of the decade, but also one that came straight out of Degrassi High.
Canada's favorite teen show "Degrassi The Next Generation" was ahead of its time touching on issues such as race, sexuality, rape, school shootings, and even feminism. I first started watching Degrassi in high school and instantly became addicted considering the fact that so many issues on the show were so relatable at the time. Some even still are considering that I'm no longer in high school. By the summer of 2009, we were introduced to Lil Wayne's new protegee.
That was the summer I declared my love for Aubrey Graham. But if you're like me, you would have never assumed that he would continue to dominate the charts every single year with hit after hit. He's pretty much had a hit since I was 15 to now being 24 and still dominating every social media platform and music playlist.
Drake continues to be someone that I enjoy listening to, but not just because of Degrassi, but also because of how he does not plan to slow down anytime soon. I have had the privilege of seeing him in concert twice. Hopefully, by the end of the summer, I will be able to see him and popular hip-hop group Migos in New York City. To me, "Scorpion" is not just another Drake album. It's an album that marks a part of my life that is currently both confusing and enjoyable and great. Being that Drake is now in his 30's is just a crazy concept.
However, just because you're liked by many does not mean that you will always be someone's cup of tea. The rapper has been in countless beefs with several others in the hip-hop community. Why? Simply because he's an easy target. Some beefs have been messier than others, but that does not mean that his career was in shambles. Even just recently there were several speculations that Drake had a child. But in the album, he openly admitted that the kid is definitely is.
The point that I'm trying to make with all of this is that no matter what life seems to throw at him, Drake will CONTINUE to dominate both the charts and my heart. I know some of you are probably going to make fun of me for being in love with someone that doesn't even know me. He may not know who I am, but he certainly knows fans like myself that have always and will continue to stay loyal.
