It’s a weird feeling having a crush. It can leave you breathless, weightless and make you embarrassed of yourself for no reason. In most cases, crushes are great! They’re the source of blushing conversation between friends, cute glances and reading into the different ways they look at you. In most cases, crushes come into your life and you either make a move or don’t. It doesn’t really matter if you end up dating, because you like that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you’re around your crush, right?
Well in most cases, this is true. But sometimes the last thing you want is a crush.
Four times out of 10, your crush is already taken. When that happens, it’s possible to roll your shoulders back and be okay with just being friends; which is great. It shows dignity and willpower and maturity on your part. But what happens if your crush just isn’t fading?
I wish there was a magic potion that could make feelings go away. But since we’re not wizards yet, we have to settle for internet tips on how to get rid of your crush.
Step 1: Admit Defeat
There’s no shame in having a crush. The sooner you admit your feelings to yourself or to someone you trust, the sooner you can move on. Take a deep breath, relax and admit to yourself that you have a crush. Then take a deeper breath and admit that you can’t be with him/her. You’d be surprised at how much weight can be lifted off your chest if you just admit it to yourself.
Step 2: Distance Yourself
It’s a little tricky if you’re in the same social circle or work setting as your crush, but it's possible to be distant while still being physically present. Focus on yourself, your friends, your job, your homework, movies, books, hobbies, etc. Whatever helps take your mind off of it will do wonders for your mental health. Just remember: you can be distant, but not mean. You don’t want to lash out at someone just because you’re dealing with internal drama.
Step 3: Move On
If you avoid them for as long as possible but still end up running into them, stay relaxed. Start up small conversations with them knowing you’re just being friendly. No flirting, no worries and no jitters. It’s just talking. Don’t worry about if they can’t read your mind and see all the embarrassing fantasies you’ve had about them. (Only you can do that.) Relax, be yourself and step away. You might even find that they’re not all that interesting or hot after all.
After all this you should be feeling good about yourself, knowing you’re handling the situation like a real adult. Bravo. Now you can focus on other people, maybe someone available this time…?
Here’s hoping….
