Social Networking has both pros and cons. It can lighten your mood or it can increase your stress. Recently, I have seen a lot of negative posts including news stories from parents overdosing while a child is in their presence to people dying to political opinions, etc.
As I walked into the dogs I am dog-sitting to let them outside mid-day on Friday, I heard a show on, talking about how they found this woman’s body. It was a show called “48 hours”. I immediately started to get the creeps, just like I have had the past two weeks due to a murder taking place in my hometown. The feeling of the “creeps” is certainly not pleasant. If that is all the news I have been hearing though, wouldn’t you expect me to feel that way?
The negatives are everywhere on media: T.V., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other sites I do not have. I like to think of home as a safe place. Lately, I haven’t. I am not blaming social media either, considering I am in a class called “Digital Social Problems,” and I am learning that social media does not cause things to happen in the offline world, but it does contribute to it.
Social media can have positive effects on us, like keeping people in touch who live in separate parts of the country, uplifting people with all of their connections and support, and even making people laugh with funny posts. I have experienced and utilized all of these positivities, one of my favorites being I can see pictures of my lovely third cousin once removed whom I’ve met once, because Facebook is capable of having us be friends.
Taking a week break from social media and the news will give me the opportunity to unplug. Right now, my plug is overheated and overworked, and it’s ready for a break. The electrical outlet has been taking all of my energy and tiring me out by making me overthink, over analyze, and try to rationalize the negatives I am seeing. I will devote my time and energy into more positive activities like working out, staying on top of my homework, and going to events I typically would not be able to attend. Who knows, I may be off social media even longer. One more thing I will add is that I encourage all of you to do a one week break from social media and let me know how it goes.
