As America undergoes one of its most devastating terrorist attacks since 9/11, how is it that we as Americans have forgotten what is really important? There is no denying what happened in Orlando, Florida is a tragedy. The lives of 49 victims claimed and many more wounded by the hands of a single man driven by insanity, is truly heartbreaking. After such an event I was sure that we would come together as a nation to mourn as we have done before; I could not have been more wrong.
In the first few days after the shooting and the news broke, the media was flooded with arguments from the left and the right. Donald Trump claims he saw this coming and that the situation could have been prevented if someone had a gun. President Obama and Hilary Clinton claim stricter gun control would have prevented something like this from ever happening again. Instead of my social media feed being filled with information on how we as Americans could help it was overflowing with people bickering about gun control and political correctness. Topics about who supports the LGBT community and why the term ‘radical Islamic terrorism’ should or should not be used seem to have taken center stage. How could a terrorist attack leave Americans pitted against each other so venomously? Have we forgotten that although we have different views we are still one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all? So maybe next time you feel obligated to vent about everything wrong with our government look instead to post something that reminds us of what should really be on our minds, the victims and families of those involved in such a horrific event. As once said by Barbara Jordan, a prominent leader in the civil rights movement, “But this is the great danger America faces. That we will cease to be one nation and become instead a collection of interest groups: city against suburb, region against region, individual against individual. Each seeking to satisfy private wants.”
