The Unavoidable Summertime Blues

You've waited all year for summer, now what?

You've waited all school year for summertime to roll back around. Fall, winter and spring break held you over for a while, but nothing compares to summer break right? But then summertime rolls around and a few weeks in you realize that sometimes it's not all it's cracked up to be. Where's all the killer summer vacations? Where's the nonstop excitement? Here are some of the things that make summer break a little less than spectacular.

Mowing

Nobody in their right mind likes mowing. Whether you have a rider or a push mower, the experience is pretty much the same. It sucks, especially if you have a yard as big as I do.

Gardening/Weeding

Just like mowing, this summertime activity is unavoidable. There's nothing better than being in the hot sun weeding or picking vegetables for hours.

Work

Just because the school work stopped, that doesn't mean that you officially get to do nothing. It's time for a summer job! You have to make money at some point and unfortunately, there's no better time than summertime.

The Heat

You've been waiting all year for it to finally be warm. No more days with fifty degrees as the high, it's time for shorts weather. What could be more exciting? What you neglected to think about while anxiously waiting for summer is that there's no such thing as pleasantly warm, only unbearably hot. Instead of doing things outside like you said you were going to, you spend your time in an air-conditioned house under a blanket.

Cabin Fever

After the nonstop whirlwind that is college, coming home can be a little bit jarring. You go from constantly being surrounded by people to spending most of your time at home (this is especially notable if you live in the middle of nowhere). Let's just say you can get a little bit stir crazy.

Sunburns

I usually luck out in this category since I tan pretty easily, so here's a shout-out to the people that burn like it's their business. I feel for you guys.

Bugs

Just when you thought you were having a good time outside the bugs come. From swarming around your head to peppering your entire body with bug bites, it's easy to say that bugs are horrible.

Even though summer break comes with its downfalls, it's important to remember the positive aspects as well. Besides, once school comes back around you'll be begging for summer all over again.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
