For someone who has thin, short hair like me, the challenge is even more difficult. One way we solve the problem is through clip-in hair extensions. They are life savers! Although they look amazing, they have their downsides which can make a diva feel as if she is living her worst nightmare. But, later on, they create hysterical memories.
My history with hair extensions began after I graduated from high school. For some reason, I thought dying my hair blonde would be a great idea. The bleach thinned my hair and I was left with no other choice but to chop it off and dye it back to its original color.
My freshman year, I decided I could no longer accept what I like to call the "big
girl" hair cut, which is the short style that girls decide to get when
they are adults. Because of this, I chose to invest in hair extensions. Now, if a diva decides
to use hair extensions, it is not easy. You have to embrace the fact that you
may have short hair on Wednesday and long hair on Friday. Also, after you have
made the commitment of wearing extensions like a hardcore diva, you often
begin to fear that something will go wrong, which is often the case.
First, wearing these clip-ins everyday calls for the hassle of curling them, teasing them and spraying them religiously. Like southern women say, "the higher your hair, the closer you are to God!" Well, the closer you come to the clouds, the more bald spots and broken off pieces of hair you encounter. I never thought I would have to purchase women's Rogaine at my age and take a handful of vitamins daily...but it happened. I can recall having a bald spot the size of a golf ball after my birthday party! Why hair extensions like to look perfect, but ruin my hair, I will never know. So, be cautious and take precious care of your natural hair.
There is
also the possibility of these suckers coming out. Unfortunately, my worst fear
happened two years after I began wearing them. On stage performing a dance
solo, a small piece flew out of my hair and glided across the stage. When I
returned backstage, I had a message from my mother saying, "Kate! I hope
that was a wild squirrel that ran across the stage and not your hair!"
Although
wearing hair extensions does create the possibility of nightmares occurring, do
not be afraid to wear them. There are
ways to prevent unhealthy hair and nightmares. I have a few tips for my
divas, out there, who are interested in looking glamorous with extensions.
1. Make
sure you focus on strengthening your own hair to prepare for wearing
extensions. Take Biotin and hydrate your hair appropriately. Also, remember
that wearing them all the time is not necessary. If you wear them all the time, you weaken your
real hair. Be comfortable with your own
self! Only wear them when you want to look extra special and don’t
want your curls to fall. These steps
have prevented my bald spots and hair loss.
2. Be
conscious that the little suckers will fall out if you don't have them
inserted properly. Teasing and spraying each layer of your hair for friction is
important.
3. Have
confidence and rock that glamorous hair! Extensions are fabulous for going out,
rush or any special occasion. Have fun with your hair and embrace the diva
lifestyle! Do not allow anyone to make fun of your hair, but make room for fun
stories. Naming your extensions is always a fun way to announce that you are
wearing them and your divalicious alter ego is out! If an incident happens, I
promise it will be something to laugh about later. Enjoy the thrill of
looking extra spicy and ignore that it happened!
With rush
coming up, hair extensions are a great way to get ready at a fast pace. They
stay curled all day and will even last until the next day. I have a problem
with my hair constantly losing curl, and using clip-ins broadens my hairstyle
choices. It stays curled in the heat and allows me to have the thicker hair I
desire.
Now my divas, I'm sure you are all wondering where to purchase them. I have always purchased my hair extensions at
a local beauty supply store, but there are many stores that sell them and they are
easy to find on the Internet!
