Are you a UC Student looking to get more involved?
Are you in the college of Allied Health Sciences and want to help your community?
Great! You’re a perfect fit for UC’s Nutri-Ed!
Not only will you rack up a bunch of volunteer hours, you’ll get an awesome experience! UC Nutri-Ed is an organization that educates our community on healthy eating. It was established to educate people in the community on the basics of nutrition. We emphasize nutrition’s importance in our overall health. Our vision is to help participants gain knowledge and begin to value nutrition and its importance pertaining to health.
Some of the nutritional education sessions we’ve had were for St. Vincent de Paul food pantry and the City of Cincinnati workers through a TriHealth partnership. We are going to start new sessions soon for SVDP and it would be a wonderful time to get started volunteering! Our sessions have been:
- How to Lower Sodium in Your Diet
- Moooove Over Meat (Vegetarian Options)
- How to Eat Healthy for the Holidays
- Reading Food Labels
- and much more
During our sessions, we lecture for part of the time and then typically do a food demo for the audience! These sessions have helped me so much! I’ve learned how to talk in front of a crowd, which has been a huge accomplishment for me. I’ve learned how to relate to others who aren’t as fortunate as I am, and better yet, I’ve learned how to help them relate to us. You will build public speaking skills and curriculum building skills along the way that will help you for the rest of your life.
The best thing about this organization is how we have helped the participants who come to our sessions. It might sound cheesy, but my favorite part of each session is just simply walking away knowing I taught something. It could be something so simple, yet it makes the biggest difference to them. I love it when something clicks for them and they’re like “wait, so this is the healthier option?” and even if that’s the only thing they learn from that session, it’s still something.
I’m the Vice President for this organization and it’s been a great pleasure. I’m looking to get more people on board for this summer and the coming fall semester. If you are looking for a new volunteer opportunity, you should seriously consider this organization! Our sessions are typically on Saturday mornings and we will provide transportation.
